The Frathouse of Durban

I've been to Banana Backpackers and Happy Hippo, and this was just an overnight for NYE 2010. The reception was really easy and the receptionist was a really nice woman. The outdoor pool and lounge area was crowded but decent. Not being a college kid, I couldn't say much about the "vibe" except that there seemed to be no real rules about stuff. I definitely saw quite a few people smoking weed and later on walked into my dorm to see 2 random people having sex in plain view. Nobody seemed to be alarmed by this, even the staff seemed not to care too much. If you're looking for a place to crash on NYE, then Tekwini is probably fine, but for an extended stay, I'm probably going to stick with Happy Hippo. I don't need to be kept awake by late night sexual liasons thank you very much! This place is for the college budget crowd.

Unique Quality: The drinks were cheap at least, the pool is also small but nice. The rooms, while cramped, were clean and the bed was fairly comfortable.

Tekweni goes off

This place is cool, even if the climate isn't. Laid back, well equipped, secure and located in the best part of town for a quiet evening out.

Unique Quality: A very small pool - but cool.

My room was a little wooden hut with notches that glowed red in the morning sunlight.

Friendly hostel in Durban

Really familiar youth hostel, where you can chill out together with people just like you.

Tekweni is located in the centre of Durbans hippest entertainment area: pubs, clubs, retaurants and markets are on the doorstep. It is comprised of 3 neighbouring houses built in 1896.

PARTY ON at our poolside bar, catch some rays, groove to the tunes and 'kick some butt' around our pool table.

There is an excellent travel/info centre on the premises and plenty of single/double rooms. We are conveniently located on transportation routes, and just 2kms from both the beach and the town centre.

Unique Quality: Pool, swimming pool, bbq possibility, bar, travel desk, internet connection, TV room with DVD, separate corner for smokers. Brilliant funny crew.
