snakes/insects in Durban?

by didas

Hi
Going to Durban in January...Any tips on what to avoid ie. food and places. Also, is there any poisonous insects/snakes to watch out for daily. Will also be going to Zulu land for 3 days, so any insects/snakes etc to stay away from or look out for?/

Thanks a mil!

Sharks in the water would be your biggest worry but, there is a net off shore.

I don't know about Durban but I have been to many places in South Africa including game reserves and never seen a snake.

Hi i'm from Cape Town and have travelled in Durban there are no snakes around. It's a built up city with beautiful beaches. If you love being in the water go to Usaka world the most fantastic place to be. Lots of waterslides, super tubes and basking in the sun. When you go there go with very little they have small little piegeon hole cubicles that you lock to store you cellphone & keys all you need is a towel and sun protection lotion. Next door is an aquarium with lots to see and do and a shopping mall to browse. Food is fine if you don't eat hot food rather ask for mild spiced food but very tasty. Enjoy

I came face to face with a Mozambique Spitting Cobra near Rorke's Drift. This is one of the world's deadliest snakes - so I would recommend you watch your step in KZN!

Its a great city...just remember if you ask for spicy food HOT you gonna get it HOT!so ask in advance if you want your food mild.

Travel Tips for Durban

a trip down zambizie river ...

by sashaod

a trip down zambizie river amoung hippo crocadiles fish eagles plus a variety of other wild animal life on the land a wonderful water front to enjoy at day time but at night dont venture out it is very dangerous.

Diving - Aliwal Shoal

by MikeAtSea

About an hours drive south of Durban is the town of Scottburgh. From here launches are made to the Aliwal Shoal a spectacular reef some 5 km off the coast.
Quo Vadis Dive Charters are my preferred operator and I have taken many dives with them to the shoal. They are next door to the Cutty Sark Hotel and run a very professional operation. Launching from the beach just outside the dive centre you will be taken some 5 km off the coast to dive this spectacular reef.
Make sure to book - since they are always very busy - especially during weekends and public holidays. You can hire all your equipment here, and also refill your cylinders.

A DIFFERENT SHOPPING EXPERIENCE

by LoriPori about THE WORKSHOP

Once a workshop of the old Durban Railway Station, THE WORKSHOP Shopping Center has a unique atmosphere with a wide variety of quality goods. While we were strolling around, a one-man band was playing and singing "Nights in White Satin", our very favourite Moody Blues song. We treated ourselves to tea and apple pie at the Mall's open-air restaurant. At the ETOSHA CURIOS, I bought the first of my masks. It had the image of an elephant carved on it on a wonderful ebony wood. At the time I paid 57 rands for it (about $15.00).

A short but very exciting and fun Ricksha ride.

by Waalewiener

How do I describe a ride like this , I wish I could show you the video,a couple of local fellows all nicely dressed in traditional clothes with a big hat with animal horns on them, very impressive looking. You get in ready for a nice calm ride , but the fellow pulling the Ricksha has a lot of energy, and he was one heck of a jumper. It still was a ride you should go for , it looks good in the pictures.

Get wet

by cleocat

Wet and wild is part of Ushaka Marine world. You can buy a ticket for both the aqaurium and wet and wild or just for one of the two.

There are slides and tubes you can just float in around and around. Wonderful for children.
