Is there a friendly VTer out there in Durban, SA?
Posted: Mon September 20, 2010 11:20 AM BST This may sound like a strange request--but here goes.
I have a very dear friend, from schooldays, who is travelling to Durban in early October. She's going alone on a very special, but emotional trip..to meet the child whom she gave for adoption 43 years ago, for the 1st time!
Obviously she is feeling very wobbly about it.
I wondered, should she need it, if there were someone in Durban, or nearby, whom she could email, for, maybe, a bit of friendly, VT support, should she need it.
She may even need someone with whom she could meet up, to get away, for a short break,of an hour or two, from the, possibly, tense situation, in her daughter's home, where she will be staying.
She will be alone and will have never flown such a distance, to such an unfamiliar country in such extraordinary circumstances.
Is there anyone over there, with whom she could make friendly contact, via email, or, even, with whom she could meet, for a coffee, just to ease the emotional situation?
The contact with her daughter has only very recently been made, by her daughter, with whom she's now been in frequent email contact! She had no idea she lived in Durban, nor that her daughter had 2 children. So- she's discovered she's a grandmother too!
Rather a lot to take on board, after so many years.
My friend is now 60 and had her baby at a very young age, in a time when it was frowned upon and she was made to give up her child.
I do hope there might be someone, amongst the wonderful VT community, with whom I could put her in touch?
All she'll need, probably, is a friendly chat, with someone who might understand her situation....and put her at ease.
Thanking you, in advance:-)
Hi Diana
What an amazing situation - I can only imagine the maelstrom of emotions that she is experiencing! Unfortunately I live in Johannesburg rather than Durban, but would be willing to provide some moral support and a sympathetic ear. Not what you're looking for, I know, but maybe better than nothing? Perhaps we could at least offer some logistical assistance in helping her to transfer from the international to the domestic flight (since I assume that she's flying via Johannesburg) depending on her travel date, so that at least she doesn't have to worry about that bit?
Regards
Cathy
Thankyou, Katherine. Perhaps if you forward me your email address, via my VT mail, I can pass it on to my friend and she could always have a chat with you? It would be good to have a friendly 'voice'.

South Africa has a very unique plug system as you can see on the picture. Adapters are available in many shops including some supermarkets. My recommendation is that you by your adapters when you are in the country.
Situated in the picturesque area of Weenen in the Kwazulu NAtal Midlands (a couple of hours drive west of Durban) you can enjoy a fun packed excursion to Zingela for some exciting white water rafting and/ or abseiling.
The major summer activity is white-water rafting, and the most exciting time to do this is between November and May.
The 30km stretch of river known as the canyon provides some of the most thrilling white water in the country. The South African leg of the Camel White-Water Challenge took place at Zingela and the venue received rave reviews from participants and organisers.
A wide choice of river-rafting packages is available - from half a day to four days on the river. One man Kayaks, two man crocs and eight man rafts are used on the river, in accordance with water levels and the groups abilities.
Safety is a priority, and all guides are trained by SARA. No previous rafting experience is necessary
While everybody else were running to Wimpy we decided we want some peace and quiet and seeing that we don't really like Wimpy's breakfast we were ready for a new challenge.
We chose Fressh because of the special they had. The breakfast was around R25 with a few additions that Wimpy doesn't have like fried mushrooms. Very nice, big and well prepared and affordable. Coffee was included in the price. Fried mushrooms.
Cape Vidal is a great area. On one side, you have miles and miles of sandy beach, and on the other you have Lake St. Lucia. There are a number of great walks between the coat and the waterway (it isn't unheard of to come across leopards, black rhino and water buffalo...if that doesn't wake you up, I don't know what will). Umfolozi National Park is about an hour away, so you can easily make a day trip there and do a self-drive safari. It is amazing how close you can get to the animals at this park (as the pictures will attest). However, I think the best part of the Cape Vidal area is the beach. If you have a four wheel drive truck, load it some coolers with some Castle Lager and some Apple Cider and drive up the beach until you find a spot to yourself and relax. If you have the equipment, have yourself a braai (a barbecue) and I assure you, you'll be in heaven. (if you like to fish, you can also do some great shorefishing in this area).
