There are little places on the beach where you can hire umbrellas for the day.
If you have transport rather go to Amanzimtoti beach. 15 min from Durban. Much nicer beach than Durban. There are shops and restaurants on the main beach. There are a few stores with umbrellas. I can't remember if they had any chairs.

Visit the Durban Playhouse - in Smith Street - a venue to arts and culture, take in the nightclub scene, take long walks along the beach and watch the sun set.
Go further South for a bit of 'tamed wilderness' - hiking etc.. Having grown up here - it holds my fondest memories of my childhood. it's just 'home' to me!

Putting Pretoria in the "Off the Beaten Path" section, is a bit of a stretch because PRETORIA is actually located north of Johannesburg. Since Hans has a cousin who lives there, we went up to visit him, his lovely wife and two boys. They did an awesome job of showing us around their city. In the heart of the city is the CHURCH SQUARE. In the middle of the Square is a statue of President Kruger.
One of my favorite spots to layout on the Durban beach is at the Sun Coast Casino beach area. It costs 5 Rand to get into this area, but your belongings are safer and you get to layout on some grass, which is better than the extremely hot sand. There are also quite a bit of free chairs and umbrellas.
Mini Town is just back from the North Beach in Durban. My parents always used to take me and my sister here when I was a child so in May 2003 when I was back in Durban, I couldn't resist the opportunity to go back there again.
Mini Town is exactly what it says it is. It's model town with exact replicas of Durban's best known buildings scaled down to 1/24 size.
