We stayed in the Avalone Guest House for 3 nights in October 2008 and enjoyed it very much. We occupied the upstairs suite which had 2 bathrooms, one large and comfortable bed, TV etc, a small fridge, safe, balcony attached to the main room and a big sofa in a private lounge. The breakfast was delicious and the barbeque (some of the other guests caught some fish earlier in the day) was great. The manageress was absolutely brilliant and made our stay so much more enjoyable. I can highly recommend this place for your stay in St. Lucia. The only slightly negative thing is that Sandpiper Street is at the other end of the village from the shops. Which means that if you want to go shopping, prefer to eat out in a restaurant or arrange whale watching and other nautical outings, you will need to walk the approx. 15 minutes from the Guest House into the centre. The walk there is mainly downhill on tarmaced roads into the village and hence up hill coming back. A nice stroll, however, we got soaked one evening...
The pool looked nice and was frequently cleaned. There was a koi carp pond in the property. Well looked after gardens and interesting wildlife beyond the garden fence. Theme: Pension/GuesthouseAddress: 15 Sandpiper Street, St. Lucia, Kwa Zulu Natal, South AfricaWebsite: www.avalone_guesthouse.com

BIBs Backpackers by Waxbag BIBs has great facilites and services but can be very loud, and some of the patrons have been quite rude. The music lasts until late at night. Good value overall.
There are three stoves in this hostel, which is quite rare. Morning walks with William, an excellent guide, are offered for free in the morning. They do beach drop offs and pick up every day as well as a free night drive. They are located right next to the dock where you can take a two hour cruise of the lake system. They can book trips anywhere in Natal, including Hluhluwe-Imfulozi, Cape Vidal, Whale watching, St. Lucia River boat cruise, and others. There is a camp ground here as well. Sand formations on a misty day by Eish The log chalets are set in a cool (non-indigenous) pine forest separated from the beach by coastal dunes. They sleep 5 or 8 people, and have a bathroom, sitting area, kitchenette, braai and a table and chairs on the balcony outside too. They were being renovated when we were last there in Aug 2006, and were very comfortable then, so they should be improved now after the renovations. At many locations there are bat houses in the forest, so you could be lucky to get a chalet near one of these. Other wildlife will walk past your chalet: the buck are relatively tame. We have seen hyena spoor on the beach, but did not meet/meat the owner of the spoor. Activities available are: surf fishing, snorkelling (at low tide just off the beach), walking in the forest or on the beach, and of course swimming. A campsite is also available. Lake St. Lucia by Waxbag There are several campgrounds in St. Lucia all adminstered by Kwazulu-Natal Wildlife(KZN Wildlife). The sites are in a pleasant location with plenty of green grass and a bit of a wild feel even though the town is nearby. The site are in close proximaty to the lake and therefore get a lot of hippos roaming around a night as well as the occasional leopard. They are here! Birds are plentyful. Sugarloaf has electrical hook ups. Both have descent facilites for bathroom and showers. Apparently these sites really book up during the summer. During the winter there wasn't anyone here. There is a KZN Wildlife office that administer all bookings located on Pelican Rd. As you go south on McKenzie St. Turn left at the round about just past BiB's and it will 1 km strait ahead. Look out for the vervet monkeys! BIBS in Saint Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal - South Africa by madbal One of my best experiences in South Africa. Cheap hostel, superb crew, clean and clever rooms. Very recommended.
Small swimming pool, BBQ, pool, fast internet connection, and nature everywhere. Great tourist desk, they give you detailed informations about things to do in the area (safari, bird watching, hippo watching, canoe, rent-a-bike, crocodile-park etc)
