Home Away from Home

The beautiful and affordable lodge is 10 minutes from Kruger Park. It was so peaceful and felt like our home away from home. The charming two dogs guarded our room throughout each night of our stay. Aside from the comfortable and 3 star hotel like accommodations, there’s also tons of entertainment and fun at the lodge. You can relax by the pool, watch TV or movies, read a book, play games, surf the internet and eat a delicious South African home cooked meal. Dave and his accommodating staff were very knowledgeable about Kruger. They told us specifically where to go in the park to view the exotic animals.

OR Tambo to Phalaborwa Gate

by sando233

Hi. We [my Mum, brother and myself] arrive at OT Tambo airport at Midday, 27 Jan. 2011 and want to be Phalaborwa Gate, Kruger by around 2pm the following day [we are staying at Letaba rest camp]. We would like to see the spectacular scenery in the area on the way. Could you suggest an apropriate route and perhaps a nice B&B for that night [our budget is about R400 pp]. Thanks for any help.

It may be a good idea to hire a car and self-drive.
Not only can you stop where you like, and admire the beautiful scenery, but once in the park, you can drive at your leisure....... we have done this a number of times.
The road is good, but avoid night driving.
Car hire id availavle at the airport. Europcar or Avis are good choices.
Many B&B along the way- but for R400 not sure if you will get the best. Check a few out along the way.

The appropriate route will be: N12 till it becomes the N4 at Witbank, Belfast, Dullstroom, Lydenburg, Sabie, Graskop, God's Window, Bourke's Luck, Blyde River, Abel Erasmus Pass, Phalaborwa, Letaba. (620km, 8hours). The most direct, less scenic route would be 560km, 6.5 hours.

The town of Sabie would be half-way.

if your are arriving midday, then you will need to have an overnighter in one of the bnbs or lodgings along along the way. The Kruger gates woill be closed for the night when you arrive in any of the gates that night. I would suggest a stop over in graskop. it has many lodging options and its about less than 5kms to God's window and pinnacle. Google graskop and you will find a lot of info for lodgings. From Graskop, the scenic route will be pinnacle, God's window, Bourke's luck, Blyde river canyon view through the three rondavel viewpoint and then on erasmus pass and then on phalaborwa gate via the tarred main highways. from erasmus pass, the directional signboards to phalaborwa are well marked out.

The other way will be from erasmus pass, proceed to the orpen gate of Kruger park near Hoedspruit. You can already confirm your reservation for letaba rest camp at the orpen gate and then have a head start on your game viewing by taking the kruger park road from satara to letaba. If you arrive at the orpen gate before 2pm you will have enough time to reach letaba before the camp gate closes again for the night. This route though is a bit longer.
