Holiday Money
by stuartkidd1
We are limited to the amount a currency we are able to take into the country. Do most places accept credit cards or should we take sterling cash or travellers cheques?
Re: Holiday Money

I absolutely second Ranger49's answer. There is absolutely no need to carry large amounts of cash with you. Credit cards are accepted everywhere, and there are thousands of ATM's. Travellers cheques are becoming almost obsolete now.(maybe keep a couple of smallish ones in case of an emergency, (like losing any of your cards)

Stuart, I agree with the other replies.
The easy way is off course to carry a credit card. Two points that I would like to add is the following:
a) In some of our smaller towns, where tourists seldom visit, credit cards are not popular. You should however not have a problem on the garden route, or on the R62 between Oudtshoorn and Cape Town.
b) You cannot buy fuel in South Africa with a credit card. You will have to carry that in cash. I normally budget on 10km to a litre @ ZAR7.50 per litre

The bigger BP and Shell fuel stations now accept debit cards (Maestro & Electron).

I think taking credit cards is the best option. So go for credit cards or debit cards. Once have a look at this site: http://www.foreigncurrencysolutions.co.uk/
Travel Tips for Cape Town
OUTDOOR LIFE & THE SMELL OF THE OCEAN
by thinking
Being outdoors, smelling the ocean, and seeing all of the beauty of the Cape is my most favorite activity. I like running on the beach and hearing the waves, riding horses on the beach, or climbing Table Mountain, sailing , or meeting the people who live here. Excellent food and wine at reasonable prices, as well as reasonablly priced personal services is what I will miss the most. It is exceptionally good here.
Xhosas, the 'clicking' people :)
by Jenniflower
The Xhosa language has clicking sounds throughout it. Hard to do with ones tongue (yes, I have tried! haha), it is a hollow sound.
When I had my handmade paper manufacturing business in the Cape, many of my employees were Xhosa, and we would spend many a day trying to teach other how to speak the others' language :) Needless to say, their English was ALOT better than my 'clicking' Xhosa!
Fond memories indeed...
Robbin Island-A deeply...

Robbin Island-A deeply atmospheric place, a flat and windswept Island which for nearly 2 decades was 'home' to Nelson Mandela - it measures 2 square kilometres and is sparsely vegetated by low scrub. In December 1999 the entire island was declared a UN World Heritage Site.
The only way to get to Robben Island is from the Waterfront on one of the tours run by the Department of Art and Culture.Inclusive ferry fare and island entry fee R100,

Great vegetarian food
by tgirl007 about Lolas
This is a wonderful eccentric gay vegetarian cafe...when i say gay not only gays frequent this cafe, but it is owned by 2 wonderful gay men, so is popular with the gay community.I worked here for 8 months and i loved it...especially the food, being a vegetarian myself i highly reccomend it.Great people, great atmosphere, very popular sidewalk cafe........ All of them are scrumptious but i rate the toasted sandwiches the most, with a choice of 2-10 toppings all on one sammie...wow!!!and dont forget the cafe latte to go with that....also the lasagne is delish...
