accomm. in Plettenberg Bay area

by petermam

Hi, My wife and I will be in Plettenberg Bay 28th.Oct'09, for 4 nights.( with car). As we are in the Western Cape for 4 weeks we need less expensive Accomm. We will be out during the days, so it is really just a clean/friendly place to relax and sleep. Any suggestions for B&B/GuestHouse/Selfcater places which are close to beaches(I like fishing) and not too far from the centre/restuarants/pubs. So many websites/places on offer we are confused. Thanks in anticipation, Peter.(UK)

Peter,
Plett has a hotel on the beach and boast a milionaires golden mile. The result is that most of the lodges/b&bs think they must cater for that market. Fortunately there is place for us normal(?) travellers as well.

For a very clean, friendly place to relax, and not too far from civilization,
try the log cabins on the Keurboomsriver, some 5km outside of Plett.

As a very good alternative, some 60km from Plett, also worth a visit if you dont stay there, is the camp in the Tsitsikama National Park.

If you need any more options, or any other advice, just ask.

Thanks Faurec. Take your point about places charging too much but looks as though we will have to pay that extra to be where we want. Already booked 3 nights at Storms River Mouth - same problem - had to book with Sanparks and they also take advantage. But at least they have to have cash to spend on the Park management, so a bit more acceptable. Plett will take us to day 16 of our trip. Another 12 days to travel back to CT via R62/mountains/winelands. Never been to SA before so wanted to have time to enjoy it and not just see it. We usually winter in India but, if it looks affordable, maybe we will spend some months in the Western Cape. Thanks again, Peter.

Peter,
Storms River is a very good option. Great place in a super environment.

If you need any pointers for your trip to C/T please feel free to ask. There are some great backroads that I can reccommend, if you want. Need accommodation in C/T? Any advice or help, just ask, it will be a pleasure.

If you want "not too far from the centre/restuarants/pubs" then forget Keurbooms or Storms River. Outside of central Plettenberg Bay, restaurants and pubs are about 10 to 20 miles apart.

We've been at Periwinkle logde in Plett last march (www.periwinklelodge.co.za) and we had an excellent experience.

Just 5 minutes driving to the restaurants and pubs...

Hope it helps!
Sebastian.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

TABLE MOUNTAIN

by LysDor

With its distinct shape, is one of the best-known mountains in the world. It is not very high, but its impressive sandstone cliffs rise up to 1087 metres (3563 ft) from the sea. It can be seen from everywhere when walking around the city.

Xhosa crafts

by Jenniflower

Two main crafts that Xhosas are know for are their intricate beadwork and their clay pipes. The young women produce the beautiful beadwork for their families. Sometimes they are even able to wear it themselves (goes back to the tradition that young women are not adorned with beautiful things until she is married).

Here is a picture of something that is not tradionally Xhosa, but shows how intuitive the local ladies are! They didnt have flowers for the church service, so took plastic bits and pieces and made some kind of decoration out of it! I love their ingenuity and touch! :)

False Bay (East)

by AndreSTGT

The coastal road from Gordon's Bay to Kleinmond offers some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in the world. The greatest highlights are the fantastic beach of Kogel Bay and the dunescape near Betty's Bay.
But behind every curve you can expect overwhelming vistas, fortunately there are enough parking spots along the road, otherwise there would be lots of accidents, i guess.
