On the beach at sunset
by payasouk
My daughter had an apartment directly above First Beach at Clifton. It was a truly magical place to set down a rug on the sand, open a bottle of well-chilled Chardonnay, and watch the sun go down. On Christmas Eve, 1998, I went to midnight mass in Camps Bay, and the service was held on the lawns outside the church. The night was warm, the scent of flowers heavy in the air - an unimaginable contrast with Christmas Eve in the UK
Xhosa initiation and circumcision
by Jenniflower
Initiation still takes place amongst the Xhosa people. Girls sometimes get circumcised too (which is largely frowned upon!), but boys are mainly circumcised. There has been an outcry for this practice to stop as there have been accidents and things have gone wrong, scalpels aren?t sterilized so infection sets in etc. But it does still go on, but mostly in the rural areas.
The boys are taken away from their village and go and live in the bush together for a few days. They partake in traditional bush dances, one being the 'Amakwetha', paint their bodies with a white clay substance and wear headdresses.
www.siyabona.com has some lovely detail about exactly what happens at one of these gatherings. Definitely worth a read!
Porcupine Ravine
by chikidee
Porcupine Ravine is the second ravine on the Camp's Bay side of Table Mountain. When you look at it from the bottom it seems impossible that you can walk up there! But there is actually a path!
I recommend to park the car just when you turn into the road that takes you up to the Cable Car station. From the parking spot there is a path that leads around the mountain. After maybe about 30 minutes there is a path that turns up the mountain. Just follow it and you'll get to Porcupine ravine. The way goes straight up. Don't turn left or right. When you are on top there is a little bit of climbing to do, but not too bad! And then there should be a path leading to the left over that little hill towards a sign post. Well, we missed that one and got a bit lost but luckily saw a different sign post and found the way again!
Porcupine ravine is very steep! But the views are so exeptional, special and spectacular that it's definately worth it!!
Down town is best at...
by Ralphy-boy
Down town is best at wednesdays and fridays - FEZ and 169 (colourds) are the best clubs I have been to, you find them right at long street. Green Point is cool too, specially NEWS CAFE and BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB. A must at sundays is LA MED inbetween Cliffton and Camps Bay.
Deep Blue
by lobstop about The Tank
"The Tank" is a very exicting restaurant in the Cape Quater. The blue light and the huge aquarium give a deep sea atmosphere. The food is very, very good and the service is perfect. Spaghetti with local mussels and clams.
