Oranjezicht during WC 2010

by schmechi

Due to WC 2010 it is nearly impossible to get a accomodation at Long Street or Waterfront. I was able to manage a bed & breakfast at Oranjezicht.

Is it possible to go out there at night? Are there (safe) taxis at night to get back from fanzones/waterfront or Longstreet?

Do you think a hired car will be indispensable? Or is it possible to manage all excursions and sightseeing tours with public transports and/or taxis?

Oranjezicht is a good address - no problems.

The bottom corner of Oranjezicht is easy, safe walking distance from Long Street (500 meters). The upper corner is fairly high on the slope of Table mountain, which is a hard walk from Long Street. (still safe, 2 km, 150 meter altitude climb)

For the 2010WC the public transport situation will be special - today it is poor.

Yes- Orjajezicht is perfectly safe. It is a pretty area. There are taxis available- but only use registered ones.
As for transport-I believe that a hire car would be good. The roads are good, and there is just such lovely countryside surrounding the city. It would be great if you could see some of it.Especially the area around Stellenbosch & Paarl, which is wine country. And the coastal trips are wonderful. Have a read of some pages of Cape Town (mine, and various other VT members) for ideas.

by Kallista

Drive up to Signal Hill in the evening before dinner, to catch the beautiful sunset. We approached the hill from the south on Signal Hill Street, near Kloof Nek Road. We stayed at Signal Hill till dark to see the shimmering sea of lights of Cape Town at night … a magnificent view of the city and Table Mountain.

Die Strandloper. A restaurant up the West Coast in Langebann. Check tourist
information centers for info, and go with a big appetite and a casual attitude. But
really, a great must see. (see restaurant suggestion above)

The Drum Cafe

by mvtouring about The Drum Cafe

A very popular venue for companies doing team building. The authentic African flavour of the Drum cafe creates the perfect atmosphere in which to experience a taste of Africa, not to merely witness, but to partake. Each person gets their own drum, and after a brief lesson on how to drum, beginners will, in no time be drumming fluently with our regular more advanced drummers. You then become a part of the powerful rhythm of the drum circle. People from all walks of life, all cultures and all ages, up to 200 people drumming together, making music. Its great fun and a fantastic way to relieve stress. As you please, but casual goes best.
