You won't find another hotel this close to the waterfront offering rates so low.
Built in a converted 19th-century prison on Portswood Ridge, the Breakwater certainly won't win any awards for charm or coziness. Its history is quite evident in the long, narrow corridors, which lead to tiny, sparsely furnished cells (sorry, rooms). Nevertheless, the rooms are clean and have TVs, phones, and tea- and coffeemakers. | | | | Ballyna House: A Great Place to Chill | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
This guesthouse, loacated in the leafy eastern suburb of Somerset West, is a relaxed, friendly spot to rest up either before or after a long journey. Run by a young South African and his German wife, it boasts TV, a swimming pool for guests to use, a large terrace with a view of the mountains, and a great breakfast in the morning. My wife and I give our unqualified recommendation to this, one of the "finds" of this particular trip. It's quite easy to find, just off Somerset West's Main Road, and is only about 3 or 4 minutes' drive from the N2.
The best thing about Ballyna House was David and Silke, the owners and hosts. They made certain that everyone felt absolutely at home. Our first evening there, we sat round a table on the terrace chatting for at least a couple hours, which doesn't often happen in B&B's anywhere -- though it's not that uncommon in South Africa, I must confess. They helped us get our bearings in town, sort out a problem with our rental car firm, and suggested numerous things for us to do in the area. We'll not soon forget their warmth and their hospitality. | | | | Formula 1 - Milnerton: What more do you really need? | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
On the advice of a South African friend, we booked into the Formula 1 in Milnerton. The motel is part of a larger South African chain that is closely associated with, if not partially owned by, Motel 6 in the US. Anyone who has stayed in Motel 6s will have a good sense of what you'll get here: clean, spartan rooms with comfortable beds, a TV, and a private bath. There isn't much else, but that's sufficient. There is one downside to this otherwise perfectly serviceable motel: It's a 20-25 minute taxi ride from downtown, which will set you back around R120 each way. My take on it is this: it's great if you have a car, but it's not good for very long-term if you don't. You may as well use the money in cab fares to pay for pricier -- and more comfortable -- surroundings.
The people running the Formula 1 were very helpful and very concerned about safety issues, trying their utmost to discourage us from using anything but telephone taxis to get around. They also used a very sophisticated French door-locking system, which was based on randomly-generated PIN numbers that you have to key in in order to open the doors. The one truly outstanding feature of this particular hostelry was the view of Table Mountain (see accompanying photo), despite the filling station in the foreground... As for costs, at R199 for a double, this is about as cheap as you'll ever get in Cape Town. For an additional R18, you also get breakfast, which was, quite frankly, a bit of a disappointment. You're better off going next door and picking up something in the 7-Eleven-type shop in the Caltex station.
