Except for the lack of air conditioning, staying in this rambling old guesthouse in Cape Town's Seapoint district was a treat. We had, more or less, the run of the house and were able to use the gigantic kitchen as we pleased. The house is filled with antique Cape Dutch furniture, which is one of our interests, anyway, so we had a time admiring the many interesting pieces that are in the building. The original marble mantel and the extraordinary Victorian chandelier in the front drawing room were of special note. Our host, Roy, an English transplant to South Africa, was ever helpful and had many suggestions regarding places to go, how to go, and when to go. Our only complaint with the establishment was that the room was a bit too small and needed both a more efficient ceiling fan and another window, or maybe a transome above the door, for additional air circulation because there was no air-conditioning.
Originally built as a residence for sailors, the house has been in continuous use as a guesthouse since the very early 19th century. Built high up on the side of Signal Hill, the views over Seapoint and Rocklands Bay are wonderful. Big Blue Backpackers is quite a nice place. Itęs a large house with a pool and a pub. Nice place to stay, very clean and at a safe place. They have lots of tours (if you want to take any) and if you want to rent a car, ask at the front desk. You wonęt find any place cheaper. Besides this, the place is very close to the Waterfront (5 blocks) and very close to Long Street, where all the Capetown nightlife is. Itęs the place to stay!!! You can find it at www.hostels.com
Close to everything, has a pool, a pub, and quite a handful of helpful people. It has Internet conection that really works!!! This hostel was very clean but the main attraction was the helpful staff. I was able to reserve my bed from Canada before I left home and they picked me up at the airport. It is also a great location within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront. Leave a Comment

a friend of mine had offered me this heaven for a special price. Regardless of greens, it deserves to relax and stay at such a place. It was quiet, romantic while looking at the river reflection!!!
Pool, river taxis next to seaport 10 minute walk, 24 security, self-catering and weekly housekeeping. Leave a Comment

We hadn't known until that day that we were planning to stay in Hermanus, but as we pulled into town we knew it was going to be a good stop. We went to the Tourist Info office and found this place -- they called and we were set! We wanted somewhere we could walk to town for dinner from, and this fit the bill. It turned out to be quite lovely -- the owner, Sue, is a little bit of a thing with a big smile and she just welcomes you in like an old friend. Off season, our room was R500 for the night.
We had a lovely second floor corner room with wonderful views of the beach and ocean. Wow, would it be a fantastic spot to stay during whale watching season. We had a lovely balcony with chairs and a table out front maximizing the view. Breakfast was wonderful. While the bathroom was a bit small, it was clean and just fine for an overnight stay. Wonderful 4-poster bed. Since it was too foggy to head around Cape Point, we thought we'd spend our last night closer to Cape Town, and thought from the guidebooks that Constantia would be another place we might taste wine and see some wine country. It is much more developed and I would describe it as an upscale suburban neighborhood -- very secure, and hard to get around without a local! We phoned from a shopping mall as we were hopelessly lost, and yes, they could give us a room for the night! (It was listed in the Portfolio collection.) The proprietress' husband came to the mall and we followed him to their lovely home/B&B. The room was a knockout, and the public rooms exquisite. (And all for an off-season R500 for the night).
Rene Pollock and her husband are terrific hosts. There's a glorious back yard with a pool. Huge sitting room with a wet bar and complimentary drinks before dinner. Wonderful breakfast. This would be a great place to stay for the World Cup in 2010! It's probably a bit too far for us right side of the street drivers (and even with a detailed map, hard to get around) to base for a Cape Town visit, but it would probably be wonderful for your second or third trip. The rooms are comfortable but basic, and the prices are budget, but where the Breakwater Lodge really scores top points is its location, right across the road from the superb V&A Waterfront, our room had views both of the Warefront and Table Mountain Because of the location and well lit streets its a short safe stroll for an evening out on the waterfront with its many bars and restaurants this is a busy hotel, it shares space with the Graduate School of Business and there can be a lengthy wait at reception. Its rooms are also not very soundproof but our floor was relatively quiet and we did not have any disturbed nights. the cleaning was adequate but not pristine and the towels were tiny. The car park is rather small too but if people parked straight there would have been lots more spaces there is a small not very comfortable bar attached to the the a la carte Treadmill restaurant which serves lunch and dinner, Stonebreakers the self service restaurant is open from 6.30am untill dinner, both restaurants are in an annexe at the opposite end of the hotel from reception Breakwater Lodge was originally built in 1859 a prison used to house the convicts who were used as forced labour building the breakwater in Table Bay, a later building with four turrets was built in 1901 and used to segregate white convicts untill 1911 when it was used for Juvenile convicts for 15 years before becoming a hostel for black dock workers
internet access is available in the Transit lounge, access costs R60 for 1 hour or is available in blocks of 10 minutes for R10 Leave a Comment
