HMS Endurance

by LouiseBennett

Hi all,

I am coming over to Cape Town on Tuesday to see the arrival of my brother on HMS Endurance and was just wondering if anybody had any news on the visit? I beleive the ship should be arriving along the quayside on Thursday but I have no idea about times and was wondering if it had been in the local press or anything?

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Louise

For the time being, just a few telephone numbers that I might want to call later.....

Port Captain 021 449 5762
Harbourmaster 021 449 2612
Naval Base, Simonstown 021 787 3911

Won't be surprised if military ship movements are classified. . . . . .

The mysterious ways of navies....

She arrives quietly on Wednesday 18th, (time not specified) for fuel and heads back to sea. Then there is an official arrival Thursday 09h00, Jetty no. 2, in the V&A Waterfront.

Strange as this may sound, this is fairly typical for navies of many countries. The early "fuelling" arrival is often to discharge the sick and lame, there could even be an ambulance on the quayside. TV crews are quietly loaded as well. Fresh food&drink is loaded to impress the journalists that evening. The next day's smart arrival is covered by the TV crews, nobody is sick, all happy smiley faces, no ambulances. The captain parks the ship smartly (having practised the day before). "look at the happy and smart Navy we have" is what gets into the news. hahahaha

Anyway I phoned a couple of very reliable sources to get the confirmation of the time/date/place. One of the sources had the date as the 20th - they called me back to thank me for the correction - your question to VT saved an embarassing moment!

Thank you so much for that information. That has put mine and my families mind at rest because we thought he'd get there earlier!

Just curious about what VT stands for? Is it a television company? Do a lot of people watch the ship come in?

Thanks again for the info you provided me!

Louise

VT = VirtualTourist, the name of this website.

I've sent you an e-mail to your VT mail address with a very reliable phone number for exact up-to-the-minute info.

Well, he is going to get there earlier, but he won't be allowed ashore, nor will you be allowed aboard. You probably won't even be allowed onto that "jetty" during the sneak visit the day/night before.

The 09h00 Thursday arrival is not a very formal one in naval terms - no gun salutes are planned, and our navy band is not going to be there (checked with my neighbour).

Very few people will be watching the ship come in. We have become a bit blasé about visiting foreign ships, and security in the harbours these days prevents the public from getting near to ships. So far the Endurance hasn't made the local news yet, and I doubt if it will.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Table Mountain has great views

by rachel_sun

Table Mountain ...i did not go up Table Mountain by cable car as there was a huge que.We walked up instead. The views are fantastic.I saw loads of beautiful plants flowering. There are over 1400 species of plants on Table Mountain. We also saw these strange rodents(related to elephants)at tho top the the mountain, which we fed.
Because the mountain is 1000m high, the views are great.I enjoyed the restaurant and shop at the top too.I found the marked walking routes good. The Cape Doctor is a south-easterly wind which blows on the cape and forms a cloth like looking cloud over Table Mountain. It looks quite strange. African Wire Art

by JohanIsWeg about V&A Craft Market & Wellness Centre

The Craft Market is located in Cape Town's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. It provides an outlet for African wire art, which originated as roadside business ventures. A spectacular array of colourful woven animals adorn the walls alongside elaborate decorative pieces. Beaded amphibians (frogs) and reptiles (akkedisse, geckos) make a fantastic vocal point on the lounge wall. Varies according to size, materials and complexity.

Car hire

by rachel_sun

You can rent cars in Cape Town and the roads are good and not too busy.We used my husbands sisters car and found driving around the Cape very easy, but we did get lost several times when we had a night out and then tried to find our way back in the dark.Do buy a good map.

Gourmet Hotel Dining

by TRimer about Azure

We loved the dining experience at Azure so much that we ate there twice in four days. Inside the restaurant is lovely. Both times we were given seats by the windows looking out at the water and the sunset. The room is decorated very modern with African influences. There is blue lighting throughout the room. On a nice day, we would have been able to dine outside on the terrace overlooking the water. The chef, Roberto de Carvalho, was a Regional finalist for chef of the year 2003, 2004, 2005. Chaine des Rotiseurs. The restaurante won the Gold Medal in the Salon Culinaire at Food and Hotel Africa.

My husband, a year later, still talks about his first meal at Azure. He had the Grilled Seafood Platter which consisted of langoustines that were almost full sized lobsters, crayfish, black tiger prawns, a piece of fresh line fish of the day, grilled calamari tubes, and mussels in a saffron, garlic and chardonnay sauce. He tells everyone that his dish was not on skewers but on harpoons. I had the Chicken Masala made in the Malay style which was so good. I typically don't like curries but this was a sweet curry with coconut flakes. I am getting hungry just thinking about it.
