Welcome to our land of sunshine.

Weather at the moment is great, warm to hot. Also not in our rain season, so generally weather should be fine, but as you know, we have no control over that.

Cape Town is the most popular tourist destination in SA, with more than 14days worth of things to see/do. See various posts on this site and if you want specific info, feel free to contact me.

At todays date you can just walk into any Hotel or Guest house and you should be fine. BUT: Our school holidays start 25/03 and then things will change. April has many public holidays and again accommodation may be hard to find. I suggest you book in advance. Again, feel free to contact me.

Try www.taveljigsaw.co.za for car rental.

I think that to make the most of your vacation that you had probably better start planning rather quickly.
In Cape Town there are many beautiful sights to see...
Table Mountain....ride the cable car up and enjoy the view.
V and A Waterfront....lots to see and do here.
Take a trip to Cape Point and enjoy the scenery along the way.
Visit the wine country and stop and see the lovely town of Stellenbosch.

If I were you I would fly to Johanneburg as your time is limited.
There you can visit Constitution Court, the Lion and Rhino Park, and so on.
You could also arrange to have a guided tour of Soweto.

You can google these places and check out the websites of the various venues. There are many people on this site who have written tips and taken pictures to give you ideas.

I would take the Hop on Hop off buses to tour Table Mountain, Company Gardens, and the Gold of Africa Museums. I would go to the Waterfront Craft Market and get a schedule as to when the festivities were going to take place. They give free drumming classes there which are fun. The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront normally have free festivities as well like gumboot dancers. I definitely would arrange a township tour trip with someone who was actually from the township. I love music so I made sure that mine had dance and music involved.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Perfect sunny day on a lovely beach...

by JackiKasner

The great beaches we have!!! You can spend an entire day in the sand and sea with your mates and after that you all go to a restaurant and enjoy your favourite cocktail while watching the sunset. Doesn't that sounds like fun?... On the beach you can play games like: Rugby, kricket, frizbee, soccar, you name it! And while you at it you can make some new friends. I love our people!!! And i love the food & wine.

Tipping in Cape Town

by jo104

As regards to Restaurants tipping is considered appropriate anything from 10%, service charge may be added into bills if stated on the menu for larger parties. Waitrons do not earn a high basic wage & do rely on tips preferable to be left in cash rather then on the card.

Tipping at bars seems to have become mandatory, for example if you order 2 drinks at total cost R25 patrons give a R2 tip on the saucer once change is returned. Of course it can get a bit silly if you are at a bar for a while so at the end of the evening you may wish to leave the bar staff a tip.

There are a lot of car guards around in Cape Town whose job it is to watch your vehicle whilst it is parked. I personally feel at night time they add extra security & a feeling of safety - Of course don't give a tip if you feel threatened, although this is usually not the case the guards are pleasent enough although there is competition & squabbling between who looked after the car. I do however feel justified in not giving a tip in a normal supermarket car park where parking is free unless they have helped find a parking spot in a crowded area or loaded your bags in etc.

Do be careful not to flaunt your cash or wallet when giving tips in the open, coins are usually sufficient.

Hout Bay

by Jenniflower

Beautiful and quaint Hout Bay can be reached by three windy roads only... and over mountains... it is a little out of the way, and has the name 'Republic of Hout Bay because of it :)

The access road that runs from Camps Bay, offers a beautiful drive all along the sea form Hout Bay to Cape Town This is the side where the sun sets, so it's a good idea to have a cocktail/some wine handy :)

The Karbonkel Mountain lies to the one side of this protected valley, the well known Mount Sentinel to the other side (looking out to the sea), and the Constantia Mountains and Chapman?s Peak itself on the other side.

Long Street

by glennkasner about Clubbing

Although Cape Town's CBD generally shut's down at night, Long Street is where it all happens. There are numerous clubs and pubs that remain open till the early hours of the morning. Varies from place to place but generally casual

erm ... read on ...

by antenna44 about ... no really ... read on :)

okay: we live in cape town .. or at least we will be again soon - and there are so many good restaurants littering the place that it's pointless me raving about any single one ... so here's a recommendation you won't find readily again :)

head for hout bay harbour and stop at the spar in town along the way: buy a little box o wine and some paper cups: load those into the car and head on for the waterfront: choose a box o seafood ... no point in me specifying which vendor to get it from ... there are a couple: this is a fishing harbour: they sell seafood ... it's all very straightforward innit :) anyway, close the deal and then drive up towards chapman's peak: stop just before the toll booth and park along the verge of the cliff ... pour yourself and yer honey a glass, sit on the bonnet and share your lunchbox ...

then someday when ya have a second, mail me and lemme know what ya think o this restaurant review ;)

ps: this endeavour is particularly enjoyable in the colder months: bring along a fluffy blanket, a couple of hours of spare time and make sure the wine is red the view
