Don't read too many reviews !!
by CASMAN
October 2008 have just had a wonderful holiday in Cape Town and the Western Cape. I would suggest not reading to many reviews on this site for Cape Town, because well meaning Tips about crime might leave you paranoid about security (which it did me!). Cape Town and the Western Cape felt very safe, even safer than my local town back home in England. It's a lovely place and everyone I know who has been loved it too.
Biltong and Droe wors
by mvtouring
The best delicasy for most South African's are biltong and droe wors (dried sausage) Biltong and Droe wors is sold in nearly all supermarkets, most malls and sometimes even on fleamarkets. You get various varieties from beef to venison. Best for me is the beef followed by the kudu biltong.
QUICK BILTONG RECIPE
So, it is Wednesday and you are on your way home from work. You remember that the guys are coming over to your place on Saturday to watch sport on the box, and you decide to treat them with some homemade Biltong. You pop in at your local butcher for some good quality fresh meat, Silverside (London Broil), Topside, Steak or such, now:
INGREDIENTS
2 kg good quality meat
Biltong spice (available from Biltongmakers-see our home page)
METHOD
Slice the meat into suitable strips, making sure that there some thin strips for those who like their Biltong a bit dry.
Place the meat in a tray.
Sprinkle 100 grams of dry Biltong spice (available from “Biltongmakers”) evenly over all sides off the meat.
Protect the meat against flies and leave for 3-4 hours.
Dry the meat with some paper towels and hang in the Biltong Maker (or a dry, drafty area).

From Street Culture to Cross Culture
by mcmash about Long/Kloof Street
Want to experience South African culture? Just follow my eyes and ears as I take you on a tour of my surroundings from the vantage point of a sidewalk cafe in Cape Town’s historic heart, Long Street. As someone once aptly put it, here you'll find an eccentric mix of the historically beautiful to the hysterically ugly – referring to the architecture – which in a strange way is very similar to Cape Town culture. A good mix of cross culture that embraces change and diversity with trimmings of the good and the bad: crippling poverty and crime tipping over to endless opportunities that hold the promise of prosperity; glue sniffing street children bugging you amidst a musicians' song of hope, while a mullah calls his people to prayers in the distance; from prostitutes, transvestites and informal African traders to yuppies and hip models.
Cape Town is indeed the birthplace of South Africa's "Rainbow Nation" It was to these shores that once convicted political prisoner Nelson Mandela returned as liberator and father of a new nation in 1990 after serving 18 years of his 27 year in prison on Robben Island – a daily visible reminder of our nation's troublesome past. A nation born of a convergence of cultures – Whites, Blacks, Indian, Malay, Arabic, Chinese, and other minorities – speaking 11 different languages, shaped by a history of oppression and apartheid. Returning from exile artists, writers, musicians and politicians brought fresh ideas and renewed inspiration. Today our nation serves as an inspiration to the world, giving the "Cape of Good Hope" true relevance.
I once heard someone say that visitors come to South Africa to liberate their souls. I know people leave Cape Town inspired. Few places on earth will you be as welcome as right here...
Live music!
by Jontxu about Mama Afrika
If you want to have the chance of eating some "african" food is one of the best places, you won't find something like this at the waterfront where all the restaurants are very european. The best thing at this place is that they usually have an African band playing at night with a lively atmosphere. The best way to live the place is by taxi, I wouldn't recomend you to walk for too long at night.
