Great white sharks on Seal Island

by midnight_mike

I'm thinking of using my airline miles to go to Cape Town in July or August. The main thing I want to see are the Great White sharks leaping out of the water at Seal Island. I really have found little about this in travel books or even on VT. Has anyone gone on this boat? I would like to know about price and the experience. I have only found one boat on the internet and i believe it cost about US $200. I hope there is more than one option.

The Seal Island experience is quite different to the Gansbaai one. As far as I know, there is only one guy, Chris Fallows, that has really perfected a technique for making sharks "fly". He tows a piece of carpet, cut to the shape of a seal, at the right speed and right distance behind his boat. His "operation" is quite low-key, probably because he has been the target of "environmentalists" who burned out his boat one night.....

Search the net for Chris Fallows's e-mail address and make direct contact with him or his wife Monique. They live near us and they have a good reputation in our community - their love is sharks and photography, not the commercialism of the tourist industry.

I don't think they do shark dives at Seal Island near Hout Bay, do they? The water is very rough there. I took a regular boat tour to Seal Island and didn't see sharks only a lot of seals.

We have lot's of Seal Island's, and two of them are quite close to Cape Town:

- The one at Hout Bay is very much on the tourist map with a lot of tour operators having ticket kiosks in Hout Bay harbour

- Then the one in False Bay, famous for the breaching sharks, which is not on the tourist circuit and you need to ask around to find, or organise tours, out of Simons Town. (Maybe also Kalk Bay, but I doubt it)

I was told that April through October is the best time to see the sharks and I'm guessing that anyone who did not see them went on the boat trip outside of this time frame. Correct?

Have no idea when, where or why sharks were not seen. Guaranteed sightings are only in aquariums, or by humans manipulating the wildlife behaviour.

It's Cliche, but go down to the Cape

by roarksown1

If you go as far as Capetown, make sure you do the great cliff drive down to the Cape of Good Hope. We were thrilled to see the famous baboons and even wild ostriches along the beach. It's a beautiful site and a view you'll never forget.

Flea Market

by paradisedreamer about Green Point Market

I haven’t been here for many years but there is still a market. It is in the Green Point Stadium's car park. You will find things like African souvenirs, second-hand books and all sorts of bric a brac. Entertaining buskers create a cheerful, relaxed atmosphere. Open on Sundays

I fly to Cape Town on British...

by travelmad478

I fly to Cape Town on British Airways, which has direct flights from London. From the US, you can take South African Airways but I think you have to go via Johannesburg, which is out of the way.
You can enjoy central Cape Town on foot and by taking taxis. However, if you want to see things that are a little farther out (Kirstenbosch, Cape of Good Hope, wine country), it's much better to get a rental car. We rented an economy model from Imperial for about US$20 per day. Driving is easy, once you get used to driving on the left side of the street, and the roads are very good.
