by mfreedman

I am spending the weekend in Cape Town on November 9-11. I have all day on the 10th to see the sites. What do you suggest. I will have a driver for the day.

Thanks

What are your interests? plants, mountains, nature, seashores, beaches, museums, architecture, history, wines, industry, agriculture? Would your children or parents enjoy the same tour as you?

Just to add the the question, we are spending 3 full days in cape town and 4 nights. What to do? Here is what we have at this point:
-Tuesday afternoon we are touring Robben island and a helicopter ride.
-Wednesday: morning half-day wine tour
Would love suggestions on restaurants and shopping, and then what to do on Thursday. Thinking of renting a car on Thursday, but not sure where to go. Do we have time to to table top Tuesday morning or wednesday afternoon?

We are a young thirties couple who loves chic spots with great food and wine. Also maybe recommend some cool bars. I have seen suggestions for a place to watch the sunset at a bar and would love to do that, but can't recall what it is.

Thank-you!!
Heather

Travel Tips for Cape Town

GO TO THE BEACHES
If you have...

by SirRichard

GO TO THE BEACHES
If you have time enough, enjoy a day in the wonderful beaches around Capetown. Beaches on the west side of the Peninsula (Atlantic) are several degrees colder than those on the east side (False Bay/Indian Ocean).
These are the most popular ones:
Clifton's: big beach, quiet, perfect for a picnic.
Sandy Bay: nudist beach.
Long Beach: a surfer's paradise.

Devonvale Golf Lodge

by cokes

Well if you wanna go for a round of Golf , why not try Devonvale Golf coarse in Stellenbosch. Its situated on the wine route and a big plus Devonvale Golf Lodge also has its own vineyards and offers some self catering unit and a hotel.

This is a rastafarian shop, where you can buy lots of rasta and African paraphenalia, i like it most for its selection of herbal remedies! They also have a real good selection of reggae/ragga music...great guys whom own it too...Levi and Yellow...blessings... Definatly get some music here...maybe some reading material, herbs etc......it`s situated right next to Green market square so don`t spend all your cash..... Depends....how many CD`s do you want?

Shared Taxis / Minibuses

by Airpunk

Shared Taxis, a common mean of transport on the african continent, are the backbone of Cape Twon’s public transport. Compared to other african cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town’s shared taxis are relatively safe. However, it is not recommended to use the taxi outside the city center, if you are not familiar with Cape Town and if you are travelling without any local assistance. Routes to Waterfront and Sea Point can be used safely throughout the night.

The driver of the taxi shouts out the destination where he’s going to. All you have to do is to get in and take your seat. Pay the driver by giving the passenger in front of you which will reach it to the front, your change will come the same way back. Shared taxis are cheaper than buses, but run more irregulary and get easily cramped J Travelling with a shared taxi gives you a small insight into everyday life in South Africa. Get in, join the locals and perhaps you’ll get involved in a small conversation.

African Experience

by Airpunk about Mama Africa

This place is one of the most popular restaurants in Cape Town, so it is recommended to reserve well in advance. Locals visit this restaurant, but it is more a tourist thing. What you get is exotic dishes in a nice atmosphere. Live music is often played at the restaurant, in that case a small charge will be added to your table. Food mostly consists of exotic meat like crocodile or kudu, but “normal” meat as well as vegetarian dishes are served too. If you are looking for a place to spend a nice evening, get a somewhat stereotypical african experience and eat things you have never eaten before, then that’s the right place. Mama Africa is mentioned in many guides as a kind of “must do” when in Cape Town and there’s no reason to disagree. I had kudu with a couple of vegetables and mealiepap. A mix of exotic meat and typical south african food.
