Hi
My daighter has used this back-packer hostel in Cape Town, and thought it very good value. It would be within your budget. It would be difficult to get cheaper accomodation, because Cape Town is popular as a tourist destination.

I just came back this week. Check out Big Blue in Green Point. The location is perfect - a few minutes walk from Waterfront and an easy 15 minute walk to Long Street. For 6 Rand the mini busses will get you out to the beaches. Big Blue is quiet at night - unlike some of the places right downtown, internet is free, there are two TV's, a pool and the staff are great.
Cheers!
Travel Tips for Cape Town
Climb Table Mountain - do not...
by Strand_Man
Climb Table Mountain - do not be stupid and go straight up the mountain. Ask where & when to climb. Visit the V&A and eat fish & chips. Mug & Bean for coffee - about R5.50 for a bottomless cup - if you are hungry SHARE a muffin - they are big.
Go up the coast to Strand through Gordons Bay then along the coastal road to Hermanus. Lots to see in Hermanus from Whales (May - November) to driving the scenic route above the town (Most people forget to do this). Just ouside Hermanus is a very good wine shop which sells even on a Sunday. On the way there or back stop off and see the African Jackass Penguin & cormerant colony at rocky bay (Around Betty's Bay) - this is not to be missed and entrance is a donation on the site. Dive at Hangklip and afterwards have a cold beer at the Hangklip Hotel. Have supper at Tallas in Gordon's Bay - better out of season. Visit Gordon's Bay waterfront - do not blame me if the barman get you plastered!!! A very good bunch of guys & girls there - lots of young overseas visitors end up staying with the crew for awhile.
Stellenbosch is another world and has things for young and old. Wine farms & wine farms some good some bad - try stay away from the big farms. Seeing Table Mountain the first time. The friendly people. Driving from Stellenbosch on the Hellshoogte Rd & on to Franshoek. Lunch in Franshoek and then back to Strand via Grabouw & Sir Louwry's pass. This was in the 'Hooligans Camper' singing 'On the road again' - in tune of course. Lamberts Bay crayfish festival (Even had one once) - a good full days party & song
Electrical adapters
by DesertRat
If you bring any electrical items with you, remember that South Africa, like the British, use a 240v system. However, the plugs are not the same. Instead of the big, rectangular pins in the British model, the South African variety is round, though about the same size. Fortunately, these adapters are available in most chemist shops (drug stores).
Scarborough Beach
by Jenniflower
This is a little hamlet-type village, set away on the mountainside, with no close neighbours around. It is peaceful and serene, with great surfing and bird life. It is located on the way to Cape Point, when coming from the Kommetjie side of the valley. It is an expensive little bit of paradise though, renown for its arty-type inhabitants.
We would often go for drives on the weekend and this drive was a favourite. Not rushed, absolutely beautiful scenery all around, and peaceful, with not much traffic.
Percies
by mvtouring about Perceverance Tavern
Percies is the oldest pub in Cape Town dating back to 1808, when travellers would disembark the ships and stay at the Perserverance Tavern. Percies is a pub in the true sense of the word where you would go for a beer and fish & Chips at incredibly reasonable prices.
England in South Africa!
by city_guy about I can't remember
Well, it was on my way back from the long coastal drive I took to the 'Cape Of Good Hope'.
Admiring the beautiful sceanery, my stomach tells me to make a stop over for some tea. Well, I came across this 'Fisherman's Wharf' kinda place by the sea. Really beautiful and nice setup too. Wooden benches and tables on a platform about the sea.
They had Fish & Chips and Lobsters only. Apparently, they were a specialized shop in F&C. So, without waiting , I ordered one thinking I was in the UK *giggle*.
The food actually turned out really nice. Fish was big and juicy and the fries were well cooked to the way I liked them. Has a 'Castle' beer too, that tasted quite nice as well.
How much? I honestly can't remember that too. all I had on my mind that days was to get back to the hotel, shower and crashout.
☺
