Safety

by 18Graham

We are staying at Lady Hamilton hotel (gardens district?) next year, does anyone know if this is a safe area? Any other tips for staying safe apart from the obvious? Is it best not to carry a camera bag? Are there any areas in the day that should be avoided? Are taxis sfae to take?

Re: Safety

by RBCal

Taxis are plentiful and safe, particularly if you use metered taxis.

Even the city bowl is safe during the day. I wouldn't walk around it at night however. Don't go to the shanty towns without a guide.

Lady hamilton hotel is in the suburb called "gardens" its quite suburban but close to the city and is central- i would not reccommend walking around at night as its quite a quiet area (side streets etc) but generally its a lovely area- quite an "arty" part of the city- lovely coffee shops in nearby kloof street. Are you choosing that hotel for any particular reason??it is also close to the mount Nelson which is one of the leading world hotels. Taxis are safe we have a great service called Rikkis they drive london cabs and you pay per zone- you can call and order them- otherwise normal taxis are safe but may be expensive- you can always hire a car as its easy to drive around especially to see the sights. If you carry a camera bag - just be aware as if you were anywhere in the world- especially in quite areas.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
A nice one...

by SirRichard

CAPE OF GOOD HOPE
A nice one day trip to the southernmost point of the continent. This cape is a real legend for the sea men.
The southern tip of the Cape Peninsula actually has two points, the Cape of Good Hope and the still more southern Cape Point. However, neither of these points is the most southern tip of Africa, which lies some 150 km further south-east. There, at Cape Agulhas, the Atlantic and the Indian Ocean meet, as the scientists see it.

Rondevlei

by Russian_37

Rondevlei is a Bird Sanctuary (Nature Reserve) near Zeekoevlei and Grassy Park!
See lots of different bird species but always be on the look-out for a Hippo!
Common Species:
Pelican
Little Egret
Sacred Ibis
Hadeda Ibis

Not so common:
African Snipe
Spur-winged Goose
Malachite Kingfisher

Rare:
Hippo - 5 most definatly exist in Rondevlei but seeing one is a different story!

Rondevlei/Zeekoevlei was also where the infamous Hippo "Houdini" escaped in 2004, you may have seen something about it on the news; (bbc http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3641226.stm) :)
My grandmothers (Ouma) friend published a book on it!

Upmarket Suburban Mall

by madeletha about Cavendish Square

Everything you'd expect from a shopping mall and more. From departmental to specialised retail stores, coffee shops, restaurants, cinemas, hair/nail saloons, jewellers, banks, need I say more. Its a combination of shopping, dining and entertainment all under one roof.

Cavendish Square has been around for ages, but was revamped in the late 90s to move with the times. If you love shopping, don't miss visiting this mall among others.

Open: Mon-Thurs 9am-6pm, Fri 9am-9pm, Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-4pm. There are quite a few shops, where you can buy unique South African fashion, decor items, and artwork. I'm sure you all know that the exchange rate is most favourable for tourists.

Go Topless

by glennkasner

The best way to orientate yourself in Cape Town is to take the Topless double decker bus that operates on a hop on hop off basis around Cape Town.
They stop at many of the main tourist spots so you can get off and explore at your own pace.

A Mixture of Seafood , Greek , Mediterranean

by cokes about Ocean Basket

Well what more can I say , if you looking for a nice seafood dish , this is your place. I must add that if you kinda like this place which you most definitely will ,just to let you know that there is many branches all over South Africa.

Every scene is different in this restaurant giving the location but its a very nice place to wine and dine and just to relax and have a nice seafood platter. Seafood Platter for one
