New Years Eve in Cape Town
by edupc
Hi guys,
My wife and I (both 33 years old) will be visiting Cape Town for one week, from December 31st. Few questions:
- what do you suggest for the New Years Eve ? As we will stay close to the waterfront (The Westin Hotel) we were thinking to go to a restaurant there. Is it worth ? Is there any need to booking in advance ? Any other suggestion ?
- How is there weather this time of the year ?
- We heard about a kind of Carnival in the beggining of January ? Is it nice ?
Regards,
Eduardo (from Brazil)

You will have a most wonderful time in Cape Town over the festive season.
Of course, you could go to a good restuarant- booking will probably be a good idea. The waterfront will be jam-packed on New Years eve.
My personal favourite thing to do on New Years Eve is to be near the beaches, on the Atlantic seaboard. Take a picnic, and watch the sunset. Fireworks will follow. There is public transport from waterfront, or you can take a registered taxi. Camps Bay is a great area.
On my Cape Town Virtual Tourist page there is a tip with pictures of us on a beach NY eve (at Scarbourough), watching the bag-pipers at sunset. It was wonderful.
If you don't mind crowds and a bit of madness- stay at the waterfront. It won't be dull, for sure.
Have a wonderful stay in this beautiful city, my former home.

Oops - I forgot to mention the carnival- yes- its wonderful fun. Gaily clad in colourful costumes, different troupes of dancing men will parade through the streets, singing traditional Cape songs, dancing, and trying to outdo each other musically. Its very festive, and almost everyone loves to watch this carnival, which has been happening as long as I can remember.

Hi Eduardo,
And a early welcome to our land of sunshine.
New years there will be a lot of action at the Waterfront. Also, if you are into clubs and bars, try Long Street, in the opposite direction from the hotel. And as Lynne mentioned, Camps Bay is also popular. Don't miss Camps Bay when you plan the rest of your week. It will be very crowded on Jan 1st.
The Waterfront has many restaurants, and more, you will find something to your liking there.
Weather? Hot and dry, not taking into account any surprise changes that some will blame on climate change.
The carnival. It dates back to the time when slavery was a worldwide fashion. Here in Cape Town, all slaves were 'free' to do what they like on, what is known here as "Tweede Nuwejaar" (translate to Second New Year). From that time, a carnival is held on the 2nd day of January, and for the same reason, Cape Town is the only city in South Africa where "Tweede Nuwejaar" is a public holiday. It takes the shape of a Coon carnival with a street parade on Jan 2 and various other get togethers and competitions to crown the best troupe over the next week.
Enjoy your stay.

The better restaurants are all already fully booked for formal New Year's Eve dinners. However, there will be plenty of food available from fast food type places. (If you want a formal dinner, you had best ask your hotel to make a reservation for you now).
The weather is generally good for outdoor partying.
2 Jan is no longer a paid public holiday in Cape Town. Staff typically don't pitch up for work, but then they shouldn't get paid.
Travel Tips for Cape Town
swimming on top of the world
by tgirl007
Situated on table mountain high above the city are a few waterfalls...easy to reach. If you take the cable car road and keep on with it for a fair distance, you will pass 2 waterfalls with catchment pools...keep going and when you get to the last one stop and take a cool refreshing swim on-top of the world.i love to do this whenever i get the chance as the waterfall is fresh from the mountain and very cold, and the view....what a view(see pic)it`s a little secret so don`t be telling everybody.....enjoy... The waterfalls and the beaches are the most awesome things in and around this great city.

Unlike some other cities I've visited, I find the South Africans here in Cape Town (it's quite a different story in Jo'burg though!) very friendly and hospitable... from the street vendors to those I meet during the course of my stay in this enchanting city. I know I'd miss this beautiful city...

Take a drive along stunning Ou Kaapseweg
by CatherineReichardt
There are three main roads down onto the Cape peninsula from Cape Town - along the Atlantic seaboard (including Chapman's Peak, if it's open), along False Bay, and over Ou Kaapse Weg (the old Cape road which runs down the 'spine' of the northern section of the peninsula), which is usually the easiest and quickest.
On the face of it, choosing the inland route as opposed to driving two of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world sounds like a rather dull option. However, Ou Kaapseweg is spectacularly scenic in its own right, and gives you a whole different perspective on Table Mountain - so, not being someone with great regard for the virtues of moderation, I strongly suggest that you drive all three!
Ou Kaapseweg is a beautifully engineered steep and winding road for most of its length with a series of hairpin bends ('switchbacks' for you North Americans) on the northern end closest to Cape Town that facilitates the climb over the southern saddle of the Table Mountain massif. The landscape is what Europeans would probably describe as 'rugged moorland' and at times it reminds me strongly of parts of Yorkshire or Scotland. The steep sandstone outcrops are covered by fynbos (an ecosystem where trees are pretty well non existent and even the bushes seldom extend over head height), and the overall effect is one of wild remoteness. It's the sort of landscape that just makes me want to get out and hike - and fortunately there are myriad opportunities to do this (see my tip on hiking at Silvermines, which is just one of many options). Because of the openness of the landscape, it is easy to get badly sunburned and/or dehydrate, so be sure to pack a hat and plenty of water and sunscreen if you decide to do this.
Many people (myself included) will tell you that the best way to get the most out of Cape Town and its changeable weather is to only plan your day's itinerary that morning and to try and avoid whichever set of mountains shrouded by cloud. This is excellent advice in regard to going up Table Mountain, Signal Hill or Lion's Head (as you won't see a thing), but I would actually recommend driving Ou Kaapseweg in mist - it is eerily atmospheric, and reminds me of a set from a Conan Doyle novel (or maybe I've just seen 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' too often!). Having said that, it is even more impressive in good weather.
Once you've driven this road, spare a thought for the poor sods who have to cycle this as part of the Argus route (see my sports tip) - admittedly they do it downhill into Cape Town, but the thought of having to control a bike down those hairpins after you've already cycled the best part of 100km is an intimidating prospect!

This waterfront restaurant claims to be the home of South African jazz, and its motto is it serves up jazz "eight days a week." That may or may not be true, but patrons are treated to live jazz every night of the week as they tuck into a spectacular variety of seafood, vintage wines and Havana cigars. There is also a dance floor where you can rock out to disco, '80s and contemporary music when you've had your fill of jazz.
Seafood at its BEST!!!

Being a South African who loves Cape Town. I know most of the places but this restuarant stands out because of it's delicious SEAFOOD PLATTER, it's not all that cheap but certainly the best. One Succulent Lobster, many langoustines and prawns.
The atmosphere is calming with a view of the Waterfront Harbour.
Warm summer nights, they have outside seating.
Desserts: Try the chocolate dream? Its a chocolate pudding with Ice Cream SEAFOOD PLATTER .
Its prepared to perfection. U will devour it. Our whole group couldn't get enough of it.
South Africans don't mind getting their hands dirty , so we ate the last bit of meat from the crayfish, even the legs and pinchers were 'sucked' clean.
Some British foreigners looked on in disgust. Hey but we enjoy good food.
