A very special tour guide
by tini58de
Selwyn Davidowitz was recommended to us by both American and British friends, who had previously enjoyed one of his outstanding tours and were full of praise.
So we contacted him via his website http://www.ilovecapetown.com/ and after he had verified that our English was sufficient to really understand the explanations, he was happy to take us on a very personal "Cultural Tour of Cape Town".
We spent a day with him and learned so much about the history, the languages (especially Afrikaans), the people, the problems and the joys of living in South Africa. We had asked him if he could take us on a tour to a township, but he insisted that he would not "tour" a township, but rather visit it. And he was more than happy to take us along on this visit to Kayamandi, where we spent more than 6 hours! If you are interested, have a look at Selwyn's photo album of our day with him.
Okay, he is not one of the "bargain" tour guides, but the money is well spent (plus much of the money is reinvested into projects in the township of Kayamandi) - so this is another reason to try to book a trip with him!
Thanks, Selwyn - you made this day very special to us!
THE FAMOUS CAPE MINSTRELS.
by PEE-WEE
As the southeast breeze kicks up outside Cape Town's Greenpoint Stadium, the sound of strumming banjos and banging drums reaches a crescendo, and thousands of merry minstrels hold onto their multicolored hats. It's the final day of the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, known more colloquially among "coloured" or mixed-race Capetonians as the "Carnival," and the excitement generated by weeks of parades and months of preparation is building to a climax. Dressed in a dazzling array of shining colors, the " kaapse klopse"--mostly men but also some women and children--burst spontaneously into song and dance. They croon in the local Afrikaans dialect of "Kaapse taal" (literally, "Cape language"), jump into little Chaplinesque jigs, and pump their parasols to and fro.
Noordhoek
by AndreSTGT
Noordhoek is a quiet coastal resort at the southern end of Chapman's Peak Drive. It's the only place on the Atlantic coast of the Cape Town peninsula which has a really long beach, 5km of white sand. This is the place to go if you really want to get away from the crowds.
