Parking Disc - for disabled

by Piggy73

I am will be in Cape Town at the end of the month & one of our group is disabled. A travel guide mentions the possibility of a "Special Parking Disc, which allows parking concessions to people with severe mobility impairment, can be obtained through through the local traffic department."

Could anyone advise where the local traffic dept is in Cape Town or suggest a website. Also just how easy is it to obtain these. My Friend has a similar disk in the UK.

Many thanks

PJ

Cape Town's traffic department has a few offices scattered around the city. These charming people (tongue firmly in cheek) have their main offices at Gallows Hill (seriously) in Green Point (easy walk from Waterfront). Office hours are . . . . short. (Yesterday's paper tells of a lady who could not get served at 2.45pm even though the official closing time is 3pm. She refused to leave, they locked her in.)

The procedure:

Many thanks Gerald - we've been caught in the turmoil of S.A admin before ;-) so I guess it may prove more hassle than what it's worth. Hmmmm if we were desperate for a free nights accommodatiopn then a lock in could be interesting ! I suppose we could wait & try at more rural traffic office - it may be an interesting experience for our family.

Cheers

The rural offices (Paarl, George, etc.) should be better. But the key thing appears to be to bring a doctor's letter and a couple of ID photos.

Before I leave a totally wrong impression, the lady who was locked in was released about an hour later after she had phoned the newspaper from her cellphone. A senior official arrived, attended to her original request, and released her. Hopefully more news to follow in the coming week......

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Cape Town Tip

by Krystynn

Good tour guides are hard to come by.... Here I am, at the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve with my wonderful South African guide, Deon Romijn. I have never seen a more fun, hardworking, humble and interesting person than Deon. He is really the best indeed!

Deep Sea Fishing off Cape Town

by GerryFM

I have often had requests from friends and clients coming into South Africa, to go Deep Sea Fishing, and Cape Town is one such place where you can enjoy this activity.

You can try your luck at hooking a Yellow Fin Tuna, Cape Yellow Tail, Mako Shark's, Snoek or a chance to catch West Coast Lobsters.

The Western Cape is also excellent for Fly Fishing.

There is an operator called Hooked on Africa, that allows you this opportunity, and will take care of all you needs and requirements, and will even offer training and tips should you be a real novice.

V&A Waterfront

by myriam_c about Shopping Malls

Shop Until You Drop at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront.
Alfred Mall features 15 specialty shops and boutiques, a restaurant and coffee shops.
Victoria Wharf Shopping Centre has over 100 shops and more than 70 restaurants/coffee shops.
Clock Tower Centre is the newest addition to the V&A Waterfront with plenty of shops and restaurants. Everything you can dream of. Mostly much cheaper than in Europe!

From Jo'burg, the Trans Karoo...

by Gypsy_Saskia

From Jo'burg, the Trans Karoo is a great way to get to Cape Town. The train ride takes about 24 hours and crosses the Karoo. Wonderful experience.
The city center can be explored by foot. There are buses and trains going from the suburbs to town.

Mexican

by nichole_521 about Cantina Tequila

I did not like this restaurant at all. The Mexican food was not appitizing and tasted more like BBQ than anything. The atmosphere was okay, but kind of hokey. I ordered fajitas and Daine ordered tacos and both dishes were not pleasing.
