New Year's Eve 2008/9 in Cape Town

by German_Girl

Hi

I was wondering what the best place(s) would be for watching fire works and whether there are any street parties on NYE in Cape Town?

Appreciate any advice,
Cheers, Sim

The majority of people will go to the Victoria and Albert Waterfront. There are usually fireworks and good crowds

The V&A Waterfront area can be called a street party, I suppose.

But there is a uniquely Cape Town event that happens on 1 January:

Beware, these parades are a pickpocket's and bagsnatcher's paradise - don't go alone.

I'm a Cape Town local and may end up just hitting the street party on Long Street. Always fun for sure.
You could also do the beach party at Clifton beach or camps bay,did that a few years back and it was great.

Hi its actually Victoria and Alfred waterfront

Prince Alfred, second son of Queen Victoria, began construction of the harbour in 1860. The first basin was named after himself, the second after his mother, hence the name.

Why Alfred and not Albert? Albert was Queen Victoria's husband but her son Alfred opened the first basin of the new harbour and therefore it was named after him and when the second basin was build it was named after Queen Victoria.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

by nikkivan

see a sunrise or sunset from the top of Table Mountain and enjoy the drive there and back. As you drive up the mountain, vistas reveal themselves as you turn the bends and curves in the road. I was born and raised in Lansdowne, a Cape Coloured neighbourhood. My fondest memory is waking to the sound of the Imam calling the Muslims to prayer at sunrise.

aloe vera gel

by Kid-A

Even with sun screen on, my shoulders were a little sun dried after a 2-hour hike around the top of table mountain. I couldn't find any aloe vera gel in South Africa except for this one kind pictured, and it's very expensive!

Lion's Head: While most tourists head straight for Table Mountain, the nearby Lion's Head hill is also a nice hike to take. (It's a lot shorter than the Table Mountain climb, too!) Here's a view of the Cape Town city bowl from up there.

Driving on the left for those American's

by jlanza29

Ok, this was my first time driving on the left...and for everything I was told by people who had done it.....My opinion is; it was not as hard as people think it is, it took me about 5 minutes to figure it out....I really didn't have much of a learning curve.....we bascially came off the airplane and into the rental car..... a bit scary when you have the car coming at you, but it wasn't hard at all.....sometimes I would have the tendency to steer right, but once you see a car coming in your direction you realize your on the wrong side and then you move to the left ......one advantage though we had an automatic car, with all the hills in and around Cape Town I think it would have been way more difficult with a manual car.

Favorite is BRASS BELL in Kalk Bay, about 40 Min from Cape Town heading to the Indian Ocean direction Muizenberg. It's defenately the best for seafood together with MUSSLE CRACKER at the Waterfront. PRIMI PIATTI (see foto) at market square down town is great for salads and pasta. oisters, crayfish or linefish (catch of the day)
