Planning on moving to Cape Town - for good?

by adamsowell

I've heard alot of good things about Cape Town and since my job is all done online, i'm looking for a low cost of living city, with a paradise like atmosphere.
Cape Town sounds like it will be ideal, beaches, cheap living, etc

1.) Does anyone have any input on this?

2.) Also, how much would a local lease a 2-3 bedroom nice size house for close to the beach?
.... all i see is tourist prices and seasonal stuff...

I have just rented out a house which is 10 minutes from a couple of beaches. http://tinyurl.com/2sfu2b R3900/month. Very middle-class, nothing fancy.

Cape Town being low-cost and paradise-like? I don't think both of those are true today......

thats a pretty detailed link, thanks. How is the crime in that area? How do you feel about car jackings? Is highspeed internet available in that area? How do car prices compare to the states when buying one?

The only time I think about car jacking is when I have to jack it up to change a wheel.

http://www.telkom.co.za/athome/products/dsl/index.html The "service" has a capped volume per month

I live in Cape Town. The internet here is quite shocking although there will in some time be a change. Try www.telkom.co.za for more info. They are our only real provider of Internet/Phone lines... But if you can cope with that, you will probably love it here :)

so no unlimited internet?

RE: RE: Planning on moving to Cape Town - for good?

by Jenniflower

You can get unlimited (24 hour) internet but you pay dearly for it. South Africa sinply does not have the same (cheaper) services that the US (and UK etc.) offer.

The peninsula is not cheap if you want to live in a nice neighbourhood. The locals have been priced out of their own market to a certain extent as people from overseas are buying property here, and prices have been shooting up accordingly.

When you have reached the 3 GigB total in a month, you get dropped down to dial-up speed. The service does drop out once or twice a day for a couple of minutes at a time. Everybody moans that it is the worst and most expensive in the world.

internet in capetown is horrendous expensive. guess u just have to limit ur usage per day.

if you need broadband, you will need an ADSL line fixed and u can sign the service with telkom.co.za or mweb.co.za.

I will prefer Mweb coz i can't rely on the service rendered by telkom

good luck !

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Fav beaches

by rachel_sun

My favourite beaches... Camps Bay was a fav of mine. The beach is wonderful and there are bars, restaurants to eat at.It is also only 15 from Cape center.I found this beach abit windy, but it was unspoilt and not too crowded. The only thing is the water was freezing, currents were abit strong too.

Hout Bay

by bijo69

Hout Bay is a small town South of Cape Town which is know for it's fishmarket. Mariner's wharf is also a great place to visit, if you're looking for some souvenirs or if you're hungry.
The scenic Chapman's Peak Drive starts at Hout Bay. It's a 5km toll road and the fee is 22 Rand per car. Unfortunately the weather was rainy and foggy when was there, so I just could guess how amazing the views must be.

Travellers Cheques

by rachel_sun

Most banks in and around the Cape will change your travellers cheques using various commision rates.

Fantastic Restaurant

by bijo69 about Arnolds

Arnolds is a great restaurant which is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There are lots of yummy dishes on the menu (also for vegetarians like me) and they always have inexpensive lunch specials. Ate a couple of times here and was never disappointed.
Of course the selection of wines is excellent aswell.
Staff is super friendly, especially Mike the manager who has a chat with everybody!
Highly recommended! All dishes I tried were great!

A Cape Town favourite

by glennkasner about Blue Peter Hotel

Although it's called The Blue Peter Hotel, It's not really that.(to us locals anyhow)
Although I've listed it as a restaurant, it's not really that either although they do serve light meals.
The Blue Peter is the place Cape Townians go to chill out as the sun sets over Table Bay.

Grab your favourite drink at the bar then find your spot on the terraced lawn and relax as the sun sets over the bay. Bring the whole family (including the dogs)
This is what Cape Town is all about! Only light meals served - The sunsets are the speciality!

Awarded the Platinum award for their wine list - One of only 22 hotels nationwide to receive this honour!
