Visa

by benwilly

Hi There,

I will be travelling to Cape Town in January, can you tell me if i need a visa being a tourist, im coming from the UK. What are the immigration procedures once i arrive in Cape Town.?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Visa

by qaminari

If by "coming from the UK" you mean you are a British citizen, you can enter S. Africa without a visa for a stay of up to 90 days as a tourist. Immigration procedures are like anywhere else, you queue up for passport control and should get a stamp in your passport to start the 90 days running.
If you aren't a British citizen, you need to specify your nationality before anyone can advise you on visa situation, or better still, contact the S. African Embassy in London in case this isn't up to date:

Make sure your passport has at least 2 blank pages. Other than that it is much the same as entering Heathrow. South Africa is a member of the "Commonwealth"

As Gerald says, South Africa is part of the Commonwealth, so South Africans visiting the UK don't need a visa, and vica versa. There is a time limit though.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

The white tablecloth

by Jenniflower

Table Mountain is famous for its 'Table cloth' - a thin, white and whispy cloud formation that flows effortesly over the top like a waterfall, only to disappear into thin air halfway down the slope. Legend and myths abound... most saying that a retired pirate, on climbing this flat-topped mountain, met up with the devil himself! Trying to protect his soul, and feeling desperate, the pirate challenged the devil to a smoking competition. They then stoked up their wooden pipes and have been smoking ever since! haha A quaint tale indeed :)

The scientific (and more boring!) explanation is that the summer anti-cyclones bring warm, moist air up from the south, which then condenses to form a white cloud layer on the much cooler mountain top, which then spills over the city side to only disperse at the warmer, lower altitude. Quite something hey?

The New Heart of Cape Town

by MikeAtSea about The Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

Over recent years massive development within the working harbour of Cape Town have established the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront. Restaurants, shops and hotels all can be found with beautiful views of the sea front as well as the city and Table Mountain.
One can spend hours here shopping, dining or visiting some of the museums and other facilities here, such as the Two Ocean Aquarium which is the best aquarium in Africa.
The Waterfront is also home to a number of music and entertainment events every year. The shopping offers are almost unlimited and every kind of store can be found in the Waterfront.

Great Beatleeee!

If you are planning a trip to Cape Town I think you will need to rent a car to move around the city. The public transport is not good. There are metro (its like a train, a little bit old and a little bit.... difficult to move with it), busses and taxis (you will find a lot of taxis in the main touristic places like Waterfront, Table Mountain, in the city centre... not very expensive and safety), but could be the best way it will be if you drive your own car. Remember that you should drive in the left side!!!
In the pic.... the car that moved me around Cape Town!!!! Great!!! isn't it???

Famous Butchers Grill, this is...

by christok

Famous Butchers Grill, this is not for vegetarians or small appetites.
Kotobuki, for the best Sushi in town in a true Japanese fasion.
Panama Jacks, in the harbour area, this is surely the best seafood in town.
Butchers Grill was voted best steakhouse in RSA 1999 & 2000.
Panama Jacks is legendary Man size rump at the Famous Butchers Grill, they serve only the best grain fed beef 'imported' from way up north and one has the opportunity to tell the chef exactly how big one wants the best cut of the day, the record is wait for this....2.1 Kg by one person in one meal!!!!!
Seafood platter at Panama Jacks where you can mix and match and get more than you can eat for three people in crayfish, prawns, mussels and linefish, drink enough beer to remind you about it the next morning for about US$75!!!!! for all.
