Durban to Cape Town by Car.. am I nuts?

by Osmun79

My parents are coming in late January. We have a friend's car to rent if we want to but I am not sure about the 20 hour drive. We'd be driving from Durban and the 2 options Google gave me were to go around Lesotho via Bethleham or Durban down the coast hooking up with the Garden Route.

3rd option? Fly.

Thoughts?

You'd certainly enjoy the beautiful Garden Route, but you don't get to the beginning until you've been on the road for about ten hours out of Durban, and portions of the N2 can be stultifying. I suppose it depends on how old your parents are, and whether they fancy an adventure in which one of them would be sitting in the back seat for long stretches. If I were planning the trip, I think I'd fly to CPT and rent a car, perhaps driving east as far as George. There's plenty to see and it would be a shame to waste more than two days of their visit on a tedious road trip.

Best option (in my opinion) - is to fly from Durban to George. then hire a car and drive the best part of the Garden Route from George to Cape Town.
Its a VERY long drive from Durban to CT- and night driving is a big NO NO.
You will need a car in Cape Town for sure, as there are so many beuatiful places surrounding the city.
You could browse my Cape Town page for ideas- (there is a link to Cape Town on my HOMEPAGE- click on my name for homepage)

My vote would be with flying, it is a long drive. If you have weeks and weeks on holiday and you can break it up by staying in hotels to split the drive up great but it sounds like you don'y have that time if you are even thinking of doing it in one hit.

Let the plane take the strain fly to George and join the Garden Route there as the previous poster suggested.

Thanks Ladies! I think we will choose to fly.

Jesse, we drove half of the DUR/CPT route over the last two days (Port Alfred / Oudtshoorn / CPT) and again came to the conclusion that it is a wonderful scenic drive. In Oudtshoorn we found a great budget overnight stop at http://www.gardenroute.co.za/oudts/best/index.htm.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

The Cape Doctor-Hang onto your hat

by lynnehamman

The Cape Peninsula has a Mediterranean climate with well-defined seasons. In winter, which lasts from May to September, large cold fronts come across from the Atlantic Ocean with heavy precipitation and strong north-westerly winds. The winter months are cool, with an average minimum temperature of 7 °C (45 °F).Most of the city's annual rainfall occurs in wintertime, but due to the mountainous topography of the city, rainfall amounts for specific areas vary dramatically. The suburb of Newlands which is to the south of the city is the wettest place in South Africa. This, of course, makes for some exciting Rugby matches, which are played at the famous Newlands stadium.
Summer, which lasts from November to March, is warm and dry. A very strong wind from the south-east arrives, and is known locally as the Cape Doctor, because it blows away pollution and cleans the air. . Summer temperatures are mild, with an average maximum of 26 °C (79 °F). The only times when Cape Town can be uncomfortably hot is when the Berg Wind, meaning "mountain wind" blows from the Karoo interior for a couple weeks in February or early March. I have a small build, and weigh 48kg. My fondest and funniest memory is trying to make my way along the main city street (Adderley Street) with a Cape Doctor blowing hard- I was having to run from street pole to street pole, hanging on for dear life- while trying to keep my skirt from blowing up.
MAIN PHOTO- We lived in St James, which is a beautiful seaside suburb on the False Bay coast. Our house was perched upon the cliffside, and we had this magnificent view of the bay. When the weather was wild, we loved to watch the sea- grey with whitecaps, and huge waves crashing onto the beach below.

Almost like Flemish and Dutch

by johanl

The local language is different from English and is called Afrikaans. This language is a mixture of Dutch and English. For Flemish and Dutch people it is easy to understand and seems to be the only region in the world where beneath Belgium and Holland this language is spoken. So al signs are in both languages and to us it is rather funny that we understand both languages.

Signal hill views

by markymark

Not sure how off the beaten this is, but you will have a challenging walk or need a car to go up signal hill. Its not a mountain by any means though, dont get me wrong. And if youve done Table Moutnain you might not bother. Anyway, nice road up. Good views. Heres a photo I took on the way down - looking into Camps Bay

Fun Night Out

by cokes about Cinnamon

This is a trendy club that has some great Dj`s. The music being played here is house , R & B and Hip Hop. Sometime they feature live bands Wear a Shirt , No Track Pants , No Sneakers. Just wear a pants to be on a safe side because I was gated the first time I went.

Its not just the wine ......

by Bacardi-Girl about Caveau Wine Bar and Deli

Lovely range of dishes using fresh ingredients. From seafood to meaty fare. The menu changes every day and from lunch to dinner. Variety is not lacking, a meal for everyone and the desserts are made on the spot. The selling point is the wine and the relaxed atmosphere in this refurbished building on Heritage Square. The staff cant wait to let you in on the secrets of the wines on special .... they'll describe and guide you thru a tasting session suggesting nibbles to go along with the glass. As the menu changes constantly, we'd have to say the cheese board at the end of a long lazy afternoon of wine and good chat while people watching.
