Currency Exchange
by wtormos
Can anyone give me a recommendation on where to exhange US dollars into ZAR's. We will be arriving to Cape Town throuh London / Johannesburg next week.
Re: Currency Exchange

When I went to South Africa, I just exchanged a small amount at the airport and got the rest as I needed it from ATM's. It is not difficult to find an ATM in Jo'burg or Cape Town and your withdraw in Rands.

You can use the ATM right at the airport. No need to bother with the extortionate rates charged by currency exchange bureaus (esp. those at airports, which are worse than anywhere else!)

If it is going to give you peace of mind, bring a couple of dollar bills, but don't waste money or time trying to convert them to rands. Simply draw rands from ATM's that are very common. The usual security precautions for ATM's apply (beware of con artists getting at your PIN and card). Most tourist-orientated businesses accept credit cards, with the major exception that we cannot buy fuel on a credit card.

You can exchange at American express, Rennies etc - at the airport, or as others said withdraw from ATM's = easy for Mastercard/Visa
Rate more or less 1 pound = ZAR 13,8
Travel Tips for Cape Town
take a short drive to Simon's...
by Krystynn
take a short drive to Simon's Town - a quintessentially English seaside town not far from Cape Town.
I found this a truly delightful place to spend some of my vacation time and also paid a visit to the rare African Jackass Penguin colony at Boulder’s Beach, a couple of kilometres out of Simon’s Town. Man, these penguins aren't shy at all! I really had a wondrous time here!
CAPE OF GOOD HOPE NATURE RESERVE
by johanl
The south part of the Cape Peninsula is covered by the Cape of good hope nature reserve. It is a area in which you find lots of fauna and flora, the most southern point, the Cape of good hope and a very interesting museum. An entrance fee has to be paid but it is really worth it. Dont miss this reserve when in CT. It really is a must !!!!!!!!

Cape Town has a big, busy international airport
by rachel_sun
Cape Town has a big, busy international airport. There is a departure tax of 25 rand to neighbouring African countries and 38 rand to all others...My flight took about 18 hours. From door to door, this was a 24 hour round trip, but worth it...
Cape Town has a good bus network. You can get anywhere in the city for about 2 rand. But buses only run along the atlantic side. There are minibus taxis that you can use.
