Self-catering for a month

by Sarah&Benj

Hi there!

At the end of October we're moving to Cape Town, but before we find our permanent residence we want to spend a month on holiday.

We'd like to spend between 6,000 - 11,000 Rand for one month in a self-catering apartment, house, or flat. We plan to eventually settle down in Camps Bay, and would like to find a perfect holiday place to stay there: close to the ocean, expansive ocean views, sun-filled abode, etc.

However, we have also been told that this may be too low of a budget for a month's holiday stay in Camps Bay. . . .Soooo, we're definitely open to staying elsewhere. Our priorities are that it's safe and close walking distance to food and shops--not necessarily shopping, just that it feels like a walkable place.

Any suggestions would be incredibly appreciated!

I stayed here: http://www.capestay.co.za/panoramaresidence/ for $600 USD/month in the months of August, September, October 2005. The owner gave me a monthly rate instead of a daily rate since I was staying for three months.

It is located in Camps Bay and is a self catering apartment. It has a great large deck with an ocean view, very safe, a 10 minute walk to everything in Camps Bay, gated, plenty of sun, outside pool. Do note that it is up hill, so the walk to the ocean is up hill. It was not bad though if you don't mind walking up hills, we did it a few times a day.

Muizenberg

by grets

I love these brightly painted and colourful 19th century bathing boxes. Unfortunately it is not possible to hire them for the day - they are let for the entire season only.

The name Muizenberg comes from Sergeant Wynand Willem Muijis, who was in charge of the Dutch India Company ourpost in 1743.

Rudyard Kipling visited Muizenberg frequently and wrote about 'the white sands' in one of his poems.

What treasures can be found here?

by kentishgirl about Market Stalls

Just like in other areas of Africa it is common to all of a sudden come across a random stall set up along the side of the road.
These people are usually selling local crafts - in Africa that usually means wooden giraffes and other wood carvings - they are cheap, good gifts - just make sure that you can carry them and that you are allowed to take them back into your country.

Cape Town is located in a dramatic setting and you will appreciate it much more if you arrive by air. The Table Top Mountain simply dominates the city which overlooks the wonderful beaches. it's just sensational.
Use those minibuses around town. They're like taxis but you share it with other people. Very popular transport for the blacks because they're very cheap and convenient but the local white population avoid them because of their bad reputation on safety.

Dinning on top of Table Mountain

by cokes about Table Mountain Cafe

When you visit Table Mountain the locals and also the car guards at Table Mountain will tell you that dinning up there is really very expensive. Never the less we were on Vacation and wanted to check out the place. They sell anything from pastries to pizza and burgers and you can have a harty breakfast if you want. All the food is halaal which is great. I guess all those people were right when saying it was really pricey.
