Wine Tours

by Jwoiv

I will be in Capetown December 19 for two days prior to starting a tour and would like to find a guide who could drive my wife and I to the wine areas and find tastings at interesting vineyards. Quality of wine is more important to us than the base cost of the tour. Any ideas who we might hire?

You can do a full day which includes winetasting, they can probably arrange more wine tasting ideas, Viator do good tours, www.asiaoz.com/africa-sightseeing.html and look at Cape Town, quite reasonable.

We found that South Africa has a wonderful offering for tourists- guides who are certified and trained on the history of the country. We were lucky to hire a guide- Linda - who lives in Franschoek and is a certified guide. Linda worked with me on an itinerary of wineries (I told her the types of places I wanted to visit and the types of wines we liked) and she called ahead to make appointments for us. She then drove us around all day to the different places. She was knowledgable and we went to fantastic places. She even helped us ship our wines back to the states. I have to look for her card but it you contact the Franschoekk Hotel and Spa they can put you in contact with her as they set it up for us.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Cape town feels quite small

by rachel_sun

When i first saw Cape Town,it seemed quite a small city. The city center lies to the north of Table Mountain and East of Signal Hill. The older inner city suburbs of Tamboerskloof,Gardens and Oranjezicht are all within walking distance. This area is nicknamed the City Bowl.
North of the city center is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.I loved it here, the shopping was wonderful.
It is very popular here, great shops and bars.
On the other side of Signal Hill,Sea Point is another old suburb. There are loads of flats, hotels ,bars, restaurants and apatments here. Here is the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront

Interesting info 4 All Malaysians & Indonesians

by cokes

"Malay" refers to that section of the Muslim community in the Peninsula whose ancestors were sent there during the 17th and 18th centuries. They came mainly from Java and the Indonesian islands (especially Bali). The first group arrived in 1667 with other groups following later. In the Cape however, they mingled with other races, among them the indigenous peoples of South Africa, as well as Arabs, Indians, Chinese and Whites.

There are about 166 000 of them in Cape Town and about 10 000 in Johannesburg. In Cape Town most of them live in the Malay Quarter on the slopes of Signal Hill. Many also lived in District Six before it was demolished.

Shopping for Diamonds and Gold

by Rachel about Various Jewelers

If you're in the market for gold jewelry or diamonds, you've come to the right place. Cape Town is known for its great diamond market and gold jewelry. You can find high quality diamonds for far less than you'd pay at home. Shop around for the best deals.

Old School Steakhouse

by brewjohnson about The Wooden Shoe

This place may look a bit dodgy (and trust me, it is), but the owner, who will undoubtably be slaving over the stove behind the tiny bar, makes one hell of a steak. We happened across the Wooden Shoe when we were buying some necessaries at the pharmacy across the street. My friend Rob smelled something delicious and saw the owner (who is a mountain of a man) crammed into one of the smallest kitchens you've ever seen behind the window on the right of the photos. We were immediately drawn in by the quirkiness of the whole scene. If you like white tablecloth and refined service, steer clear of the Wooden Shoe. If you like great steaks and have a soft-spot for dive bars and hole-in-the-walls, you'll find this place a real treat. I'd suggest having a beer at the incredibly tiny bar while you wait for a table - while you'll be sweating profusely from the grill which is only a couple feet away, you'll have a birds-eye view of Willi, the owner/proprietor, working his magic. Apparently, Willi was a long time customer who loved the place so much, he bought it. I love stories like that and I love that he's the one flipping the steaks. There's a lot of love in those steaks!!!!

Bonus - the Wooden Shoe is rumored to be the second oldest steakhouse in Cape Town (second to Nelson's Eye). The Pepper Steak was incredible.
