happy to visit cape town!!

by belltempo

hi!! on august 28 I´m going with my boyfriend and another couple to cape town,It´s our first time there and we are really excited about our journey!!
we are staying there for 10 days and I would like to know if 10 days is too much for only staying in cape town and sorroundings and if we should move to somewhere else.we have no problem in moving around even if this means hours by car.
For our stay in cape town I will be so gratefull if someone couald recomend the "not to miss places", a nice hotel to stay and good restaurants to go to!
I´ve told the best option to move around is renting a car,do you now a cheap place to do this?

what else... what about the weather? should we take clothes for cold weather?

thanks in advance and cheers from spain!!

thanks so much!!!

I just returned from 3 months there. Lots to see and do around Cape Town! Here are my suggestions:
- take a cable car up Table Mountain
- go to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela used to be imprisoned
- go to the wineries (many areas to choose from - Constantia, Stellenbosch, Franschoek, and Paarl are all easy day drives from Cape Town); unlike a previous poster I do NOT recommend petting a cheetah at Spier winery, as the cheetahs are drugged in order to make them docile enough to pet
- definitely go on a township tour to see how most people around Cape Town live
- go to District 6 Museum and Slave Lodge (central Cape Town)
- go to Camps Bay (lovely beach and many cafes across the street)
- drive to Simonstown and Boulders Beach (where all the penguins are), to Cape Point, and back along Chapman's Peak (toll road but beautiful views along the ocean)
- if you're into hiking, climb Lion's Head or drive up Signal Hill
- if you like markets, on Sundays there is a huge one at Greenpoint Stadium and a smaller one at Hout Bay; Monday through Saturday is Green Market Square (central Cape Town)
- stroll through Company's Gardens

Cape Town has a huge variety of weather so even in the dead of "winter" I sometimes had on a T-shirt, capris and sandals whereas other days a sweater, jacket and long pants. By end of August it's getting nice but do bring something waterproof as it tends to rain off and on in the "winter"

As far as restaurants, my favorites in central Cape Town include Yindee's (Thai) located just off Kloof Street, Cafe Mojito's (Cuban) on Long Street, and Bukhara (Indian) just off Long Street. Go to www.diningout.co.za where they have all the info, including menus and maps. Food is fantastic and Cape Town and cafes plentiful.

Enjoy your trip!!

Two years ago we were at Spier. A member of our group asked the people working in the cheetah pet area if the cheetahs were drugged. The staff person said yes. It came straight from those who work with them.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

General info on Cape Town

by Jenniflower

Cape Town is bustling with life and has loads to do.

I wouldn't swim with the penguins in winter (June/July, as it is very cold then! Although the Indian Ocean (Fish Hoek, Simon's Town side) is warmer than the Atlantic Ocean (Hout Bay, Clifton Beach and Camps Bay Beach side).

Imhoff is OK, has some nice cheese and arts and crafts... if you enjoy browsing then it's lovely to visit.

The camels do not ride on the road, but on the beach, which is lovely. I do recommend this. There are places there to horse ride on the beach too (Long Beach, Noordhoek).

For Ostriches I would venture to Oudtshoorn, which is a bit far out of Cape Town... but I would not condone riding an ostrich, it is NOT healthy for them at all, no matter what people say. It does a lot of damage to their legs.

Winter weather is not great in Cape Town, if it were only cold that would be fine, unfortunately Cape Town gets cold, wet and windy... so let's hope for a mild winter whilst you are there! The cold is chilly but not as cold as other places in SA, like Joburg (inland and on the Highveld).

Car rental is definately best, get a car at Cape Town International. Alamo are a good hire company, inexpensive and we have used them a couple times when we have been back on holiday.

www.sleeping-out.co.za is quite good, as is Rooms For Africa, here is a link to cheap accomm there.

If you have more questions, please do feel free to ask. Happy planning! :)

Llandudno

by AndreSTGT

Llandudno is a wealthy coastal resort between Camps Bay and Hout Bay. It's mainly a residential area with big villas, but few bars or places to eat. Therefore it's very quiet and never crowded. The beaches here are fantastic, one of them is apparently nudist which is very unusual for South Africa.

V & A waterfront

by paradisedreamer about A tourist trap??

The african market is a great place to get your souvenirs as most of the stuff is good qaulity but it may be more expensive than informal stalls on the road

The shopping Mall will have everything you would expect. There is late night shopping seven days a week, the most convenient hours in the Western Cape. In addition there are boat rides, cinemas and restaurants.

10000 km nonstop

by CliffClaven

One of old Cliffie's trips to South Africa involved one of the longest flights he has ever taken: more than 10000 km nonstop from Hong Kong to Johannesburg. That flight was with Cathay Pacific, but for his other visits to South Africa old Cliffie flew South African Airways. They always got him there safely, in comfort and on time. What more can you ask from an airline?

Best Pizza @ Diva's

by jo104 about Diva's

The most fabulous pizza you've ever tasted & they are rather large.
I had to visit Divas again on my last visit & again was not dissapointed, I ordered a pizza with bacon, feta, avocado and pepperdews (a south african sweet bell pepper pickled) Cheryl enjoyed a thai green curry chicken pizza with chilli. Both pizza's were R50 and again huge the house wine is reasonable per glass
