More about Southern Sun Waterfront

Cape Town - what a place

by TripAdvisor Member Caz06

We've just returned from our stay at the Holiday Inn, Waterfront in Cape Town. The hotel was a typical modern building, but unlike other reviews, we found our room to be spacious, very comfortable beds and very well insulated with no background noise at all. The morning breakfast in the dining area was just lovely, with fantastic choices - food from the world was provided for all nationalities and tastes. The service at all times was fantastic and helpful. The pool is small, but well maintained. We did not try the restaurant at night - we chose to eat at the V&A Waterfront where there was just the most amazing choice and very reasonable both for food and drink.

The hotel is some 10/15 minutes walk from the V&A Waterfront, but a half hourly shuttle bus service runs there and back and we took full advantage of this. We were never charged for this service, just had to produce confirmation of our room. Our trip had been arranged with Virgin, and maybe they have an arrangement with the hotel, though we saw that the majority of other guests did not have to pay for use of the shuttle bus.

Cape Town and its surrounds is just amazing. Trips we took included the Peninsular tour (a must), The Freedom tour (the visit to the shebeen was quite something, though we were saddened to see how things are in some of the townships, but SA is really trying to resolve this)and a visit to the V&A is a real must. The shops are pricey, but the entertainment provided is free, and the food and drink very cheap - for example visits to Quay 4 and the Ferryman were such good value and we highly recommend.

Another must is the open top bus that takes you around Cape Town and its surburbs - we stopped off en route to visit Table Mountain and that is something that everyone should try to do - wow! The helpful concierge will assist you on tours, such as this bus, but we took advantage of Thomsons to guide us on the tours we wished to make - they were just superb and we can't fault them.

There are still problem areas, especially at night - but then, what city in the world doesn't have bad things happening as the lights come on? We ran out of time to visit the city centre and out of town shpping Malls (like Century City), where prices for goods are much cheaper, but we would not visit the centre at night at this time, unless taken directly to pre-booked restaurants by taxi.

We would certainly recommend a visit to Cape Town and the Holiday Inn Waterfront to our friends and family, and intend to return.

Very good choice

A chain hotel but very clean, comfortable, quiet and excellent service. Breakfast was yummy (huge choice).
Half-hourly shuttle bus to V&A Waterfront was brilliant.

We hired a car from Europcar who have a desk in the hotel and parking underneath and hotel is ideally located for accessing the main N1 and N2 highways.

We didn't have dinner in the hotel but did try the pizzeria just opposite recommended by another reviewer and found it excellent.

Very nice

My husband and I stayed one night at the Holiday Inn in April 2006. We had a lovely stay and the staff were great.

We arrived a few hours earlier than the advertised check-in time but there was no hesitation at all in allowing us a free early check-in, in fact we didn't even have to ask!

The pool area is quite small but very nice. There a small bar in the lobby - it wasn't that well stocked but if you're not that fussy you'll be fine, they have all the basic wines and lager.

The breakfast was delicious - a self service buffet! Can definately recommend it - it filled us up for the entire day's sight seeing.

The rooms were of a good size, very clean and had everything you might need (except a mini bar). Room service was also very good - and very cheap too! (compared to UK prices).

We had a car with us and used the hotel's underground car park which has direct access to the hotel lift, security guards and CCTV. It seemed very safe - we left our surfboard in the car overnight and it was still there, safe and well, in the morning.

All in all this hotel is a great all rounder and only a minutes drive from the V&A Waterfront (the bellboy/doorman will order you a reliable/secure taxi from the front of the hotel).

good dining experience

I recently visited Cape Town and enjoyed a wonderful holiday. Stayed at Holiday Inn Waterfront and this was really good in every way, accommodation, food and very efficient friendly staff. Before travelling I didn't catch the fact that Waterfront was an area and that the hotel was not actually "on the waterfront", but it was close by. I had first class dining at Belthazar Wine Bar at the V & A Waterfront. The steak was delicious, the wine list was amazing and the waiter who served certainly knew his job. His knowledge of the items on the menu, the cooking of various dishes and wine list was excellent and took time to explain everything in detail. A very enjoyable evening meal.

Friendly staff, good location

This was our first time in South Africa and we chose to stay at this hotel as it was close to the V and A centre. Generally it was a walk of about 15mins,although on days that we just felt lazy we took the hotel shuttle bus.

The staff at this hotel were extremely helpful and friendly. The room was always clean and tidy. On the two occassions we ordered room service, once the wrong meal was served and on the second delivery the meal was of very poor quality. I spoke to the manager about this and he refunded the cost of the meal.

Laundry was reasonably priced, the maids would call to check if we had any, and would then take it without completing the form. This worked out even cheaper.!!

Generally we would stay here again if we were on a budget. If not we would find a hotel with a better view, but all in all our visit to this hotel was good.

One month or more in Cape Town

by travelingmona

Thank you everyone so much for your helpful guidance. I am looking forward to visiting and exploring Cape Town with the goal of finding out if this is the place to move to. Can you please advise me on a place to stay for a month or so, and also anything else you think me and my boyfriend should know. It looks like we would need a car to get around. Any recommendation? I will be reading your sites for tips on restaurants, places and things to do. I will very much appreciate anything you can recommend or suggest. Thank you again and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Hi Monica

We know so little about your tastes or budget that it is very difficult to recommend a place to stay. The obvious advice is to come as a pure tourist for at least a week or two and then make your longer term decisions.

From the nature photos you put on VT, I wonder if you are interested in Cape Town city life, or if you would prefer to stay in a quiet village near to Cape Town. Many city folk rush out to weekend houses out of the city and a lot of people retire to the quieter (and cheaper sometimes) villages. Within an hour's drive of Cape Town there are places like Darling, Malmesbury, Riebeek-Kasteel, Wellington, Tulbagh, Worcester, Paarl, Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, Villiersdorp, Grabouw, Strand, Gordon's Bay, Betty's Bay, as examples.

Needing a car depends on your intended lifestyle.

Thank you so much Gerald, are all these places out of town safe to wonder around? :) Monika

Thank you Dieke, it is actually great idea.

It may surprise that those "out of town" villages are considered to be safer than the city . . . . . just like most other cities/villages around the world. Most of the villages I mentioned are highly desirable as safe places to retire to.
