Disappointment of the year

My wife & I were invited to the "Grand Opening" of this new hotel in Cape Town. Staff were friendy and attentive but opening night was at least two weeks to early.
There were no plugs in the bath or basins, soap dispensers did not work, the TV in the room was not connected and had no Remote control.
After the party, which was a real blast, we retired to our room, only to be kept awake by another party at a rather dodgy establishment on the opposite side of the road and things only quietened down when the police intervened at 04h30 in the morning.
I admit that I am a light sleeper but this is the first time that this has happened to me.

Unique Quality: The hotel is very modern, staff very attentive and location is very central but there is no on site parking although overnight parking is arranged at a nearby parking garage.

Transport to Boulders Beach

by snailsrock

I'm going to South Africa for a month in two weeks with a group of people from my school. We're going to Cape Town for a few days and really want to visit the penguins at Boulders Beach but can't seem to find any transport to get us there :( We're on a tight budget so getting taxis for us all would be too expensive. Can anyone help, please? :)

There is a train, although its really scenic- i am not sure about the safety- i think that from Muizenberg to simonstown (wher boulders is) it should be cool. But not from Cape town to muizenberg. I promise that when you get here you will find a sollution there are lots and lots of transport companies and especially for students/backpackers etc there will be some sort of way. There are companies- let me get back to you.

It is a pleasant 2 mile walk from Simon's Town station.(30-40 minutes) with a couple of cafe's, restaurants, pubs, museums, shops, sights along the way.

There have been muggings on that train, but you are in a school group and should be fine if you avoid going in the dark.

You could take the train from Cape Town. They are now running if Im not mistaked a seperate tourist carriage. An all day hop on hop off pass between Cape Town and Simons town costs R25.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Cape Town Tip

by Kallista

Below the high, steep cliffs are rocks and shallows. I simply love staring at the strong waves pounding on the rocks, making gaps and weird shapes in the rocks. For those adventurous ones and photographers out there, do be careful when you 'slide' down these 'harmless' cliffs for a shot of adrenaline or for a good photo!

Boulders beach - the penguins

by Luchonda

From Cape Town to Simontown and than the the Penguin Islands more South.
A unique reservation - nobody knowns exactly why those little species can survive on this spot - but they do !!!
Look at them - surfing on the waves !

Camping Equipment

by kenHuocj about CAPE UNION MART (PTY) LTD

If you're into the outdoor life, this is paradise.

They now have shops also in the Cape Town and Johannesburg International airports.
plus most of the major malls.

with the Strong $, Sterling & Euro, wait till you arrive in outh africa before buying some of your equipment. Specialist retailers of clothing and equipment for outdoor leisure pursuits >>> e.g. Camping, hiking, sailing, safaris, skiing and travel you're paying in Rands, not dollars nor euros.

You can get to Cape Town by...

by local7460

You can get to Cape Town by anyway you want. Many large international airlines fly here directly and it is increasingly becoming a popular stopover for cruise liners.
Walk, train, bus, taxi, car, bicycle, etc, etc. Be very careful where you go after dark. Ask first before you venture into the streets.

Nouvelle cuisine

by AndreSTGT about The Restaurant

'The Restaurant' is one of Cape Towns most renowned and trendy upmarket restaurants and reservations are a must as the restaurant doesn't have many tables.
While i generally enjoyed the food here, i found the dishes and the service here a bit too 'wannabe- French- chic' and there are better and less expensive restaurants in Cape Town.
Nevertheless, it's a nice little brasserie and the food is above average.
Mains between 80-100 Rand!
