Ferry to Robben Island

by richard48

We will be in CT later this year and would like to visit Robben island.
Can anyone tell me if the crossing is choppy as I suffer from seasickness.
Thanks

I suffer from seasickness on occasion and had no problem with the crossing. If you have any concerns, take ginger tablets about 30 minutes before departure.

It is like the English Channel - some days flat as glass, other days so bad that traffic is stopped. (There were about 5 days this year that the sea was too rough to run the ferry)

We were there in late November last year and the crossing was not choppy at all.

I hope you've booked your ticket. YOU NEED TO.

Dear Richard,
Well, I have the same problem with sea sickness!
I have been to Robben Island twice and both times I felt sick! The second time however, was much worse because the sea was very rough. As bad as the high waves, however, were the fumes! That made me fell really sick!
The crossing takes about 40 minutes. I advise you to take sea sickness tablets (you can get those at any chemist...) and to stay away from the back of the boat, where the fumes are bad!
Oh yes, and book your ticket a few days in advance because in high season it's quickly sold out!
Although the crossing might be a bit unpleasant with sea sickness, it's a very interesting and moving trip to this historic island!
Enjoy!
Astrid

Travel Tips for Cape Town

THE CITY CENTRE

by PEE-WEE

Cape Town central is one of the top international destinations in the world & is filled with natural beauty & a rich variety of exciting activities.
The Cape Town Central area is situated at the foot of Table Mountain & includes the city beaches along the Atlantic seaboard. The Cape Town CBD (Central Business District) is a relatively small area, which allows for easy exploration on foot. All you need is a good pair of shoes, a map & a general sense of direction. To get to the beaches and surrounding suburbs you will need to use your own transport or public transport.

Cape Town City Centre has the Museum Mile, the Company Gardens, Greenmarket Square, St Georges Mall, the Bo-Kaap and much more. Numerous excellent hotels, loft apartments, trendy restaurants and bars can be found in the heart of the city and along the coast. Take a trip up Table Mountain; visit the V&A Waterfront, with over 270 stores, a wide selection of restaurants, art and craft markets, or make use of world-class conference and hotel facilities. Last, but not least, take the trip to Robben Island, the former home of Nelson Mandela.

Along with the City Centre and Table Bay Harbour, Cape Town Central includes the beachside suburbs of Bakoven, Bantry Bay, Camps Bay, Clifton, Fresnaye, Green Point, Mouille Point, Sea Point and Three Anchor Bay as well as the trendy city suburbs of Vredehoek, Oranjezicht and Tamboerskloof. Look out for accommodation, bars and restaurants with a view of the Table Mountain and the Harbour.

GROOT KOP

by mtncorg

Standing at 857 meters, the Groot Kop stands as the highest of the Apostles (Blinkwater Peak, at 989 meters, is not one of the anointed Twelve). To reach the top you have a ways to walk in whichever direction you tackle the peak from: the Table Mountain cable station, the Camps Bay sea shore, the exposed end-section of the Suikerbossie track leading up from Llandudno or one of the long options that lead up the east side of Table Mountain (i.e. Skeleton Gorge from the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Area) which all involve long traverses across the water reservoirs of the Back Table. The main trail that traverses the spine of the Twelve Apostles is known as the Suikerbossie Track. This track traverses around the east slopes of Groot Kop from where a small boot-path leads off and up - the path is marked by a simple cairn. In maybe 300-400 meters horizontal, you gain the required 70 or so vertical meters - a little scrambling being required at times - and can take in the vast views from the top. It is fascinating to see the back side of Table Mountain and its water reservoirs. You can see the cliffs of the Orange Face drop off the Back Table. Turning you gaze to the south and southeast, you look over Constantiaberg to farther peaks near Muizenber and Simon's Town. Hout Bay is far below. Judas Peak is just to the south, the last of the Twelve. To the west, cliffs drop 857 meters to the Atlantic just south of Camps Bay. You will probably be alone up here, so be prepared for possible weather changes. Wind/fog from the southeast - the Cape Doctor - is a condition for immediate retreat.

CAPE TOWN: GREENMARKET

by zindara

In the greenmarket you will find all kind of African crafts (most of them South African crafts). You have to bargain here to get the best prices. I think is one of the cheapest places of the country to buy souvenirs to take home! It is right in the centre of the town.

A great way of geting around...

by greentara

A great way of geting around is calling a 'rikki's' it's a taxi service that's cheaper than the usual taxi but make sure you have time as they pick up and drop off quite a few people on the way. ah yes and it's more like a little truck so and not much padding on the seats! So watch out for those bumps!

Affordable luxury

by AndreSTGT about The Cape Colony

This restaurant is located in Cape Town's most famous hotel : the Mount Nelson. Having dinner in the tasteful and luxurious dining-hall is a real pleasure and the service is perfect. But even here, in one of South Africa's poshest and best restaurant no dish costs more than 10€. Try their Cape Malay dishes, they are truly outstanding.
Bo-Kaap Chicken and Prawn Curry with Jasmine Rice, or
Cape Malay Kingklip with Pickled Onion Ragout.
