Great Cape Town Accomodation near Long Street

I stayed over Christmas and was impressed by the quality of the dorm rooms, single beds, lots of space and very clean. One of the best backpackers I have stayed in for the quality of the rooms. The hostel had a very friendly atmosphere and the staff were excellent at organising activities for you. One word of warning though, if you are on your own be careful walking from the hostel to long street at night. We were approached even though we were a group of 4 guys.

Unique Quality: They have nice pool, a great bar with pool table and sky tv for all the sports.

Great views and reasonable rates at the Backpack

We stayed here for 4 nights in December 2006 in a private double room with shared bathroom, and had a great time. The hostel had a good balance of quiet areas and loud ones, with rooms spread all over 4 interconnected houses on the same property and a shared kitchen and common room with a TV. There is also a bar area with a pool table, an outdoor central patio and several informal ones around the houses, and an internet cafe. The breakfasts are to die for, and the pizzas aren't too bad if you are too tired to leave the hostel at night. Our room had a great view of Table Mountain. There are various activities planned every night of the week, with the braai being the best of them. There is also a travel planning centre where you can arrange tours, car rentals, etc.
Complaints: the pool needs to be cleaned more than once a year - it looked really gross when we were there.

Unique Quality: pool, great common area, view of Table Mountain, organized activities

The Backpack.

This nice hotel is very well situated, is located in a nice house, with bar, restaurant, swiming pool, and great views fo Table Mountain. They have dorms and private rooms, I paid around $40.00, for a nice private en suite room.

A meeting point for all travellers

I booked this hostel on internet because it was publicized as the best hostel in South Africa.

The Backpack is indeed a good hostel and it is located in the centre of Cape Town, not far from Long Street. It has a parking lot, a small pool, a bar (which provide also meals) and the office of the Africa Centre, where you can book your trips or activities. Everywhere you have soft sofas where you can relax yourself or sleep. The hostel and some rooms have also security boxes where you can put your documents and money.
In the bar you can have DSL internet connection at 40 Rands per hour.

I stayed in a single room ensuite (with bathroom) and I payed 300 rands per night: not exactly cheap, but Cape Town is quite expensive talking about accomodations and since the location is very good and the rooms clean, I can say I was fully satisfied of my stay.

Unique Quality: The Backpack is located in the heart of Cape Town, about 300 metres from Long Street. Inside the hostel you will meet people from all over the World and share with them travel experiences, drinking a fresh beer and watching a cricket or rugby match.
Sure, you will have a wonderful time there!

Not as expected

We expected a real backpackers atmosphere but the guests during our stay were just regular tourists (as we were... ).

So we were some kind of disappointed. Also the price seems to be a little bit too high for the product you get (30€ for a double room without breakfast). That was our most expensive accomodation on the trip.

Unique Quality: Great location, great view to the table mountain.
Very nice old lady (rents cars there), who can give you tons of excellent tips.

A classic backpackers accomodation in Capetown. They have a travel agency to help you plan your stay here and for truck travels to Namibia & Botswana. Nice ambience, helpful staff and a basic but clean accomodation.
