Petrol Prices / payment

by Jennycaemawr

Visiting South Africa in Sept and no idea how much rands we need for petrol. Could anybody tell me how much a gallon it is please. I have also been told we can't use a credit card to purchase petrol. Is it cash only?
Thanks for your help, Jenny

About R6.50 per liter, or R300 per tank, or R300 for 600km - this is a very rough guide.

Yes, cash only. (You will see some locals using cards, but those are not credit cards). The big service stations all have cash-dispensing ATM's, a shop, restaurant and fairly clean rest rooms.

some petrol stations allow one to use debit cards- this has worked for me at SHELL garage (seaPoint) as Gerald says, the petrol stations are usually great they have 24hour stores and banking and toilets etc

From Wales.....here the petrol is about half your price. But you might be surprised at how far apart places are and how much driving you actually will be doing. It is wonderful motoring country - good roads and good scenery.

Travel Tips for Cape Town

Good Food & Wine Show

by mvtouring

The Good Food and Wine Show is hosted at the CTICC and it seems like it is becoming a bi-annual event. The retail group Pick 'n Pay sponsors it and they bring a few celeb chefs out to come and do demonstrations. The last one I went to see Anthony Warrel Thompson and he was absolutely fab. Afterwards we bought some of his cook books and did a 'photoshoot' with him. He is such a darling.

Penguins at Boulders Beach

by jonah1

The Western Cape is rich in marine life and the little Penguins are definitely a big favourite of mine. They pretty much go wherever they like but obviously tend to gather in the areas they nest. Boulder Beach is one of these areas and just walking in the general direction you can even see them way up on the cliffs in the bushes where they breed and stay out of the sun. The others obviously are swimming about in the stunning blue water of False Bay - well worth a visit I thought!!

Shopping and entertainment

by claus9000 about Canal Walk/Century City

Shopping mall with a complete range of shops, eateries and cinemas as ell as outdoor cafes. An absolutely safe place even at nighttime. Next to the mall is a Holiday Inn Express Hotel from food to luxury items Average price, most popular among the locals

Hop on, hop off

by mvtouring

Finally I did the hop on/hop off bus in Cape Town. The cost is R120 for one day or R200 for two days. We did the red route which was the CBD, Cable Car over to Campsbay. Very nice and most informative.

Best Sunsets in Cape Town

by GerryFM about Cafe Caprice

One of the most popular establishments along the famous Camps Bay beachfront, Café Caprice attracts a trendy crowd of sophisticated young professionals, glamorous models, and its fair share of celebrities. Due to its ideal location with wonderful views of the beachfront, it is also popular for film shoots and has been fortunate to receive several good write-ups in overseas publications.

Sunsets along this part of the coastline are legendary, and outside tables are filled to capacity every evening with a lively crowd enjoying sundowners and the impressive variety of cocktails on offer. The large lounge area, complete with eye-catching wall mural, has a superb vibe largely created by the resident D.J. who plays every night in season and at weekends in the winter months. It is also an ideal venue for functions such as cocktail parties and product launches and can be closed off for a more intimate atmosphere.

Adjacent to the bar area is the upstairs restaurant section which is reserved for non-smokers and has a fireplace for cosy intimate dining on cold winter evenings. Café Caprice is very popular for breakfast with Eggs Benedict, Healthy Rising and a variety of omelettes being popular choices. Wholesome lunches include crisp salads, baguettes and ciabata with a selection of fillings, and an excellent 250 gram pure beef burger. The food is great, but for me the main attraction of this place, is sitting outside sipping a cocktail, people watching and waiting for the sun to set.

Really Beautiful!!!! (people and sunset!)
