I took the shuttle from the airport which is 100% cheaper than a taxi (120 rand for shuttle versus 250 for taxi)…and shuttle service was quick once you’re led outside of airport (Counter for shuttle beside luggage carousel). Entrance to hotel is small and you are admitted after buzzing, which is good for security reasons.
The area is relatively safe but would advise not to walk alone in dark and less populated parts of the city. Taxis readily available (drivers usually playing cards) and most places 5-10 minutes drive within the city are about 40-60 Rand (7.5 Rand to $1USD).
The hotel is located near very good restaurants, and I liked the native African restaurant (Nyoni’s Kraal Restaurant) on Long St just between Shortmarket and Longmarket streets on Long Street. “Mama Africa Restaurant” which is a few blocks away on Long Street is always full at nights and you need reservations (walking along Long St away from Convention Center). Nando’s is also a tasty but cheaper chicken fastfood option which is along Long St as you walk about 5-6 blocks down -- going to the convention center.
Hotel is situated right alongside the Greenmarket square where there are good deals on souvenirs and even antique jewelry. The front desk had a friendly young man named “Pule” who readily got me a safari reservation despite all the safaris being booked due to the convention. The other receptionists were also very nice and professional, and a Japanese tourist was so happy and asked me to take a picture of herself and the lady receptionist!
The hotel breakfast was very basic though and they would cook you eggs and sausage, but selection is limited but adequate. I also did not see room service except for drinks until a certain time only. Internet reception for my laptop was very weak in my fourth floor room so I had to connect at the lobby or the breakfast room.
Apparently, Tudor is the oldest hotel in Cape Town, being there since the 1700’s but renovation has been okay and plumbing was good, and hot water and shower easy. My room was small but bed was big and comfy.
And there was HUGE Metal Safe for your gold bars (if you have them) in the room! It was great having all my valuables secure and you just bring the key with you. Your whole backpack and laptop fit in perfectly!
Room was cleaned adequately. The elevator was very small but quick, and I was still able to fit in my humongous Under Armour canvass luggage. Overall, still a good hotel after 200-300 years, with the wood paneling in the room bringing you back to that era and a perfect location to explore Cape Town.
Great for single travelers and couples who want a simple established hotel and do a lot of walking around Cape Town.
Cabinets were available for my clothes and suit, and most striking was the huge safety antique (safe deposit) box where I could put in my whole big backpack!
