Car rental advice

by klmousseau

Hi, I was hoping to get some advice/help on car rentals from Cape Town Airport to Port Elizabeth Airport. Any recommendations on car rental agencies? Anything to look out for? What type of insurance is recommended? What is the "excess"? Is it advisable to get any of the additional coverages or is it better to get coverage under travel insurance?

Thanks very much!

I would deal with the well known companies, as I always feel there backup in the event of a problem is usually better due to the fact that they are more represented through the area.

Any one of Avis, Budget, 1st Car Rental ( ex national-alamo)Hertz or Imperial would be my choice

I would do the insurance with the company conserned. They are alll reputable companies

Hi,

I have use a company called 'Aroundaboutcars' 2 times for a total of 2 1/2 months.

http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/30b4a/fac/9/

They are a fantastic company that will beat any price you find. HAving said that they use some of the major car rental firms for their cars. Both times I had a brand new car.

I elected for a high excess and had an accident in Botswana (I picked the car up in Jo'burgh). The damages charged to me were way LESS than the excess and incedibly low. Most companies charge extra to insure tyres. I didn't and had a flat after 10,000 kms. I had been in the desert of road for weeks and there is only so much a trye can take. The cost of that tyre was less than the insurance I would have paid.

Most travel insurance does not cover car rental and/or the car rental firm will not accept it. Be very careful on that point.

I have drivem in RSA, Bots, Moz, Namibia, Lesotho and Zimbabwe with their cars and the 3 times I had an issue they were here on the phone for me. The 3rd issue was a manufactures defect and the garage in Namibia fixed it free after Aroundaboutcars spoke to them. They also did the insurance and entry paperwork for all of the countries.

I don't know anyone who as punished rental cars as much as I have. A true test of a rental company is how they help you when it does go wrong. These folks never let me down.

Have a great trip!

Investigate whether your credit card covers insurance. For example, if we pay for travel with our credit card, it doubles as travel insurance. However, make sure your policy has excess cover. Not all travel insurance policies cover motor vehicle accident excess, which may become a headache down the track should something untoward happen (heaven forbid).

Travel Tips for Cape Town

The Hike up table Mountain- If...

by ratcorp

The Hike up table Mountain- If your reasonbly fit , GO for it. It takes around 3 hours , and weather permiting ,its awsome. Take something to drink (I took 2 ,500Ml cokes ) I finished both before i got to the top but was able to full up one of the bottles with fresh water from a stream half way up.
The Scenery is beatiful. The plants are amazing. The climb its exilirating. Climb up and take the Cabel Car down. Look out for Rock rabbits (Dasies ) some species of buck and the huge variety of birds on the way up. Experienced climbers can go straight up the mountain (next time for me) . Keep to the paths , watch out for snakes , and go in a group. Keep an Eye on the weather , and take a wind breaker , as the weather changes VERY quickly. Getting to the top of table mountain , out of breath , laying on a rock and having tourists asking me if i need and ambulance. I just needed a smoke.....
(Photo taken on the way UP table mountain - you can see the cable car in the middle peak . Table Mountain is 1085 meters above Sea Level.)

Four Seansons in one day

by cokes

Hey Guys , all I can say is always keep a jacket handy. Cape Towns weather is influenced by the warm Indian Ocean and the very cold Atlantic Ocean.

The wind can just start blowing all of the sudden and trust me , it can be how hot sometimes you`ll get this this cold breeze blowing.

You can be on signal hill checking out the view and all of the sudden you covered in mist. Sometimes you find its storming in Cape Town and it might be dry with clear skies in Simons Town. A word of advise , try not to visit Cape Town in winter because it`s their rainy seanson and it can become very miserable in Winter. Watch the wind as well because that South-Easter can really get blowing sometimes.

Riebeeck Wes

by mvtouring

Riebeek Wes is situated 4km from Riebeek Kasteel on the R311 in the direction of Moorreesburg and is closely linked with Riebeek Kasteel. Riebeek Wes, like Riebeek Kasteel used to be a district of the Swartland congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church at Malmesbury, but later became independent. Riebeek Wes is noted for the fact that two of South Africa's major political figures were born here. General Smuts was born on the farm Bovenplaas in the 1870 and Dr DF Malan on the farm Allesverloren.

Live Music

by jo104 about Barleycorn Music Club

Every Monday evening from about 8.30pm you can head down the River Club and listen to live music. The barleycorn music club has been running for 20+ years as a non-profit organisation with the sole aim of appreciation of live music. The diversity is from solo guitar, accapella, rock, jazz to reggae & classical.

There is a small door charge at the moment R20 and silence is asked for when the musicians are playing casual

Dining in Hout Bay

by SESM about Mariners Wharf

On a balcony overlooking the tiny beach and blue water of Hout Bay, you can enjoy fresh seafood and the view! There are other more informal restaurants near the wharf but this is the nicest one. You can't go wrong ordering the "line fish" which is the fish of the day! Even if you don't recognize the name of the fish -- try it, if you are a fish lover, you won't be disappointed! Kingklip, Cobeljou, Cape Salmon, Yellowtail or Tuna are all good bets!
