The bay lodge: Gansbaai's best guesthouse
This guesthouse is in De-kelders just on the outskirts of Gansbaii and about 3 minutes drive from the centre of town. The guesthouse has a fantastic sea front location and we could really see lots of the southern right whales right in front of the bay. The house outself is reallt decorated in a beautiful way and doesnt feel like a guesthouse or hotel. Instead it feels like a personal but well decorated home.
The rooms are outstanding with a terrific balcony over looking the bay. The rooms are superb and beatifully furnished with complimentary tea/coffee and water.
The breakfast is wonderful and there isnt anything the hostess Villeria wont do for you, including recommending places to go and calling around to book trips etc. The best thing about staying here, is the unique homely feeling you get, almost like your own house! Villeria is a wonderful friendly host and cant do enough for you.
it's got the best whale viewing by a long way, forget hermanus this place is much better. It's also on the doorstep of the shark diving companies.
Easily the best stay we had in SA
Unique Quality: The service offered by the host makes this the most unique place i have stayed in a long time. It felt like visiting your favourite relative and coming home, and i cant really say anything higher than that!

Grootbos: Private Nature Reserve
Private Nature Reserve - Ooh it sounded lovely, and lovely it was. I stayed in a Forest Lodge Suite, we had, a large living room, with log burner, a nice sized double bed (converted into 2 singles for us) with mosquito nets, a large open-plan bathroom, which included a twin showr, loo, twin sinks and the biggest bath i've ever seen with great views over the bay, a second bathroom with loo & shower, and a small kitchenett area (inc mini bar). Kindly provided in the room were a flashlight, umbrellas and all equiptment needed to light log burner.
The main Lodge was open plan and airy, comfortable chairs, open fires, and again, amazing views over the bay.
Staff were amazing and nothing was too much trouble for them, when we returned to our suite in the evening, the staff had lit out log burner, turned down the beds, and also run a bath and lit candles around the bath area.
My roommate Annie had her 21st birthday at Grootbos and they proveided champagne and orange juice in the suite the morning of her birthday.
Michael, the owner of Grootbos was the perfect guide, he took us to the Green Futures horticultural and Life Skills College, which is run by Grootbos, and showed us around the Garden Lodge.
Unique Quality: Grootbos is set on the side of a hill in between Gansbaai and Hermanus. It has two types of property and two lodges to match, Garden Lodge is set in a milkwood forest, more suited to family getaways, the Forest Lodge, is a more contemporary and modern style, apparently suiting the more cosmopolitan traveller! Grootbos is a diferent kind of property, instead of the usual spa treatments/concierge service, they offer 4x4 drives through the milkwood forests, guided beach walks, where you can do a spot of whale watching, or a flora/fauna tour, where a guide will walk you around the surrounding property and point out all the different types of flowers.

Grootbos: Amazing
I just love this hotel! We stayed in the garden lodge (no kids under 12) part of the property. The rooms are individual cabins in the grounds all with full sea view. Our room had 4 showers!!! and the bath has the most incredible view - see photo (and this doesnt do it justice). You could whale watch with binoculars from your bathtub!
The hotel is on a full board basis and all the food was delicious. Most activities are included - see their website for details. having stayed in many beautiful hotels all over the world this is one of my favourites. The hotel is a eco friendly, fairtrade hotel and has won so many awards.
