De Oude Fabriek Restaurant is trying to offer genuine South African cooking to tourists, holiday makers and anyone with an interest in local cuisine. Biltong-topped salads, ostrich, venison and even crocodile. Some dishes were pricy but all seemed to be good value.
The route of the Choo-Tjoe is from George, via Victoria Bay, Wilderness, Sedgefield and Goukamma to Knysna and goes through some of the most spectacular scenery in the Garden Route lake district. The section from Victoria Bay along the Cliffside and over the Kaaiman’s River viaduct to Wilderness is one of the highlights of the journey.
The Garden Route has long been considered a perfect paradise, the Garden of Eden, with lush indigenous forests, gently rolling hills and tranquil lagoons. But is paradise now being destroyed?
Today Knysna and the Garden Route has become a playground for the very rich and sometimes famous. The tranquility of Eden has fallen under the developers' bulldozers and the memories that I have from my childhood have been rapidly eroded by 21st century reality. With more and more golf courses in the area the coast is rapidly become very Californian. Some argue this is good, others that it's an eco-disaster.
But while the coastal region vanishes all is not lost. If one takes the roads inland, there is still much of the Garden Route that has not only been left intact, but is also being preserved. One such place is Teniqua Treetops - a sustainable, eco-friendly treehouse resort tucked away in it's own piece of indigenous forest - a place where "peace comes dropping slow".
