The Inyathi Guest Lodge: A funky and friendly little inn

The Inyathi Guest Lodge is a funky little inn on the main street of Knysna that we spent one night in while driving along the Garden Route. The inn is set up as a series of wooden cabins going up a hill amongst attractive plants and flowers. Each cabin is different, and most have at least one stained-glass window. The rooms were comfortable. The evening that we were there was chilly, and the owners gave us an extra electric heater just in case the room got chilly.

The owners are a young couple who are very friendly. We checked in at the end of the day, and they directed us to a great local restaurnat, where we had some of the best seafood of our trip. After dinner, we had a couple glasses of wine with the owners and a few of their friends who had stopped by for a cookout.

Breakfast was included with our room rate, and was very good. We had eggs cooked to order, along with toast and a choice of other hot and cold ite,s, including sausage, bacon, and tomatoes. The inn had free WiFi in the breakfast room.

We enjoyed our stay at the Inyathi Guest House, and believe that it offers good value for the price. We would stay there again if we ever come back to Knysna.

Highfields Backpacker: Good Backpackers on the Hill

The Rough Guide to SA once called this the "Best of the backpacker lodges." When a friend and I stayed there in 2001, we thought it was a very good backpackers. It had a pool, a nice deck, and they offered a wide range of activities and day trips. I didn't stay there during my last trip to Knysna in 2004, but I did notice that the competition had gotten much more intense, so I'm not sure they'd be able to hang on to the title of "the Best". Its definitely worth taking a look, though.

Yellowwood Cottage: Knysna's secret accommodation tip

The best accommodation on our SA holiday - very clean, spacious - my son and me had a house with 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms. Very good equipped kitchen. Very homely. The view is great, very safe and quiet. I am very glad I did find this accommodation on the internet. Cheryl was the one that answered me first on my request for accommodation. I must have send out about 30 mails- request for accommodation and a quote for the time we wanted to stay.

This accommodation I will recommend to everybody, although one cannot see the lagoon and I did not know this accommodation is not on the busy side of Knysna, but right on the otherside - a few km drive and one is back in Knysna.

Lindsay castle: Something special

I have never stayed at Lindsay castle myself but have visited the area numerous times and is always struck by the beauty and unique qualities of this 'castle cottage'. It is situated on a wonderful quiet beach about 20 minutes from Knysna. Even though this is self catering accommodation, breakfasts and lunches are included with an optional dinner.

Ideal for romantic or just quiet relaxing getaways. The only down side is that the road to Noetzie passes an informal settlement which seems unsafe at night although I don't know of any recent incidents.

Its a beautiful piece of architecture on one of South Africa's most beautiful and undiscovered beaches.

Highfield Backpackers: The better option

I've stayed in Highfields backpackers on two occasions and had a blast both times. The building is an old two story house with high ceilings and wooden floors with the later added extra rooms and bar (with pool table) at the back. The rooms are decorated very tastefully and there is a large variety of room types to choose from. There is also a kitchen with where you can order breakfast (or stock your own) and also chips throughout the day. The owner, his girlfriend and the rest of the staff are all very friendly and fun!

The only downside (as with most hostels) is that the front area of the house (especially the room above reception) can be noisy at times. So if you're a light sleeper rather opt for a room at the back.

This hostel has a swimming pool, braai area, tv room and bar which is great for meeting other travelers. Dinner can be arranged and it is also within walking distance of the Waterfront where there are some great restaurants.

Best Little Guest House: Nice Place in Oudtshoorn

Well my stay here was very nice. The rooms here is quiet big as they could accomodate a whole family. The owner Brian and Sue also made you fell at home. Breakfast was also very nice.

Here you could help yourself to the drinks in the fridges or at the bar and just right it down in a book that they had there.

One thing that I did`nt like was I found these 2 huge cockroaches in my room. They were really big and reminds me of the ones you get in Durban. The bathroom does`nt have too much privacy as you had these swinging bar doors so it only covers part of the doorway.

Oak Tree Bed & Breakfast: A Nice place in George

I really like staying here , its in a suburb about a 1 minutes drive into the town of George. What is even better was that the owner Sarah was very nice and made you feel at home.

The unit I stayed in was a twin room , its self catering as they have a kitchen with everything you need. Its a very nice place to stay and would recommend to all who intend to visit George. Breakfast is at 7am and is very nice with a nice variety.

Its situated in a very relaxing a quiet Neighbourhood. The staff that works for Sarah is very nice.

The rooms has their own tea/ coffee facilities, mini fridge, TV, clock-radio, electric blankets and heaters. The unit I stayed had a fully equiped kitchen which was nice.

Teniqua Treetops Self-Catering Eco-Resort: Whispers from Paradise

Set 16 kms inland from the main road of the Garden Route and about a half an hour's drive from Knysna itself, Teniqua Treetops is an idyllic, eco-friendly getaway. Uniquely constructed treehouses made of timber poling and structures with tented living are tucked away in the seclusion of the indigenous forest.
Teniqua Treetops offers 8 fully self-catering treehouses, each with kitchen, bathroom - all with spectacular treetop views, and bedrooms. Some treehouses sleep four, some three and, the "honeymoon suites", with sunken baths, sleep two. One treehouse is suitable for wheelchair users.
Teniqua Treetops also offers a pool, children's play area and recreation room, along with a conference facility, ideally suited for small team building groups.
Each unit has a microwave, gas cooker, barbeque, and fully equipped kitchen. Bedding is provided, as are heaters for chilly nights.
Prices are calculated on either a 1, 2 or 3 night stay and are seasonally adjusted and are calculated per treehouse as opposed to per person.
If you are seeking peace and tranquility and the healing, soul-restoring power of nature, this is the place to which to escape, it is truly, in the words of W B Yeats, a place where "peace comes dropping slow".
I will return there over and over again. The treehouses ensure comfort and privacy. And everything you need is there, including a safe. You want for absolutely nothing. The owners are wonderfully accomodating and you'll probably find, once ensconced in your own nest, you'll never want to leave!

Teniqua Treetops is unique in many ways. Not only have the treehouses been lovingly crafted using the natural form of wood, but each treehouse is completely eco friendly ensuring sustainable use of the forest. Treehouses have only been situated in natural clearings or where there were alien trees. Water is recycled along with waste. Each treehouse is also sufficiently removed from the other to ensure utmost privacy. This is truly a unique and very special place, ideal for nature lovers, birders or those just wishing to escape.
The views at Teniqua Treetops are spectacular - just imagine sitting on your own private deck or in your bath and gazing out across a forest canopy that towers up from the gorge in which the river bubbles and rushes. Around you birds call and sing and you end up feeling that you must surely be in paradise.
Teniqua Treetops offers tranquility and peace in an ultimate "bush" experience combined with great comfort.
The owners are friendly and knowledgeable about the area and will happily arrange trips for you to nearby attractions - but the likliehood is that once you arrive you won't want to leave until your stay is over. Such is the attraction of paradise.

Bougain-villa B&B & Self Catering: A friendly B&B

It was an absolute delight to stay at this National Heritage site constructed in 1890's which although renovated still held some of the victorian charm.

Hosts Annelise & Nolene run a clean, friendly B&B
There are 4 double rooms & one twin room, all have separate entrance & en-suite shower
The garden is beautifully maintained & we ate breakfast under the trees.
We were treated to an extra special addition to the normal breakfast which was in the form of potatoe & sweetcorn fritters.

Annelise & Nolene were extremley helpul on places to visit, restuarants etc.

We had a room which had its own deck with a stunning view of the lagoon
The rate per person was R220 per night incl breakfast

There is a self contained unit suitable for 4 people.

You are able to park inside the gates & it is very secure
The other nice feature is its proximatey to town - we were able to walk into town in
2 minutes & approximately 10 minutes walk to the waterfront
