I felt very safe in Knysna. It is a lovely, peaceful place and was one of the highlights of my trip to RSA. If you like birdlife it is a great place to spot all kinds of exotic species including the rare Knysna Lourie.
I can thoroughly recommend Pumula Lodge if you are looking for accommodation. It is a wonderful place and the owner, Peter Ellis, is a very nice guy. Details on my Knysna page which, unfortunately, doesn't have a lot of info at the moment.
Something else you might like to do is take a ride on the Outeniqua Choo Tjoe steam train that runs between Knysna and George. I wanted to do this but unfortunately ran out of time.

Knysna is as Phil said a very nice place, visit the lagoon, take a trip on the train and do some hiking. There are a few nice campsites too. The food is great. We had no problems what so ever. Seemed very safe to us.

Something for everybody, but the seafood is mmm...

by pmarshuk about 34° South

In the shop of the same name, sit out front at the waterside and contemplate the world going by. Not really my favourite - but it looks sooooo good:
Prawn Extravaganza
Served on a platter with lemon butter, garlic butter and peri-peri sauce
A combination of 24 34° South prawns, 4 Queen prawns, 3 King prawns, 2 Tiger prawns & 1 large Tiger prawn each

Cost of this is 275 Rand (GB£22-23, US$35)

The Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe is the last steam hauled scheduled passenger train operating in South Africa taking in the scenery between George to Knysna

A single costs R70 adults & R50 children with a return costing R80 & R60
during season 1/9 - 30/4 daily services except sunday
Off Peak 1/5 - 31/8 service monday, wednesday & friday

departs Knysna 9.45 arrives in George 12.30 so 2.5hrs journey
Departs George 14.00 arrives back in Knysna 16.30

We did not do the train journey but did catch the train as it crossed our path in Brenton near Belvedere

Oysters and love

by morne

When I think of Knysna I think of the wonderful times I have had the pleasure of spending with the one I love. This town with its fantastic oysters, ice cold white wine has so much to offer whether you are in love or just love the world and life.

I have always enjoyed visiting Knysna and it will be one of my favorite holiday destinations for years to come.
