We were just passing through Swellendam and happened across Cypress Cottage. Its a very charming little place, with good sized rooms, in a nice location on the main road in Swellendam. The building is one of the oldest homes in Swellendam and has a ton of old-Cape charm. An extra bonus is the fact that its right next door to a phenomenal restaurant, Koornlands. Overall, I think its a great sign when the owners are so proud of their establishment and their town that they are saddened/offended when they find out that you're not staying longer. That's what happened at Cypress Cottage... the owner was shocked we weren't spending a few days in Swellendam (she gave a great sales pitch, so next time, we may). Overall, Swellendam is a charming little place that I'd like to return to. When we do, we'd definitely stay here again. UPDATE: Apparently, ownership has changed at Cypress Cottage, and they have done some big renovations to the rooms, etc.
It's location right next door to the fantastic Koornlands Restaurant (please see my restaurant page). Very charming, old building. Good location in center of town.
The Old Mill is a national monument built in 1813 and beautifully restored in its original shape. It has a large garden with old shady trees and the mill stream flowing by.
Very rural atmosphere.
Our room was in the mill itself, it was huge and had a separate bedroom with twin beds and a big wardrobe, a sitting room with couch and 2 armchairs, a large TV with M-net, heating, tea-coffee making facilities, and a design bathroom with big walk-in shower, sink and toilet. Private entrance.
Hot and cold breakfast was served at the table, whatever we wanted.
This guesthouse houses a restaurant "Old Mill" with excellent cuisine (with Belgian specialties like home-made icecream and Belgian waffles!).
We were informed by the (very friendly) Swellendam tourist information bureau about the Hermitage Huissies and they happened to have a vacant cottage.
In the middle of a garden with roses and fruit trees and among grazing sheep in a meadow about 3 km out of town, these cottages (there are 2 available) will make you stay longer as soon as you have arrived. We wanted to stay longer too, but time was a problem, so we just stayed for the night.
Next to our house was a duck pond and from both cottages you have this "million dollar view" (as the landlady explained to us) towards the Langeberge ("long mountains").
