On our first night at Hillwatering, we decided to make use of that huge bathroom after a long day's drive from Johannesburg and our evening meal out in Sabie. On our arrival at the B&B, we had purchased a very nice bottle of South African 1982 Alto Rouge from their private celler. It felt great to soak in the tub and enjoy a flavourful wine by candle light! It was a satisfying feeling to be underway in Africa again after so many years away!

While standing out on our deck admiring the views, we could see African ladies and their children walking down a path into Sabie. They also noticed us and turned to wave even though we were quite some distance away - it was a nice gesture! Our deck is shown at the upper right side in this photo taken from the back garden which was surrounded by a huge hedge.

On the first morning there, we were up early, before our agreed upon time for breakfast, so I spent some time wandering around in their garden checking out the bird life. I had a laugh watching a Scissor-Tailed Whynah performing an aerial courtship ritual before I turned to my tourist info to see what attractions we should take in after breakfast!

  • Hillwatering Reception Area - Sabie

We had pre-booked Hillwatering from Canada after it had been recommended to us. It more than lived up to its billing! We wound our way down into the valley where Sabie is located after our 5-hour drive from Johannesburg, just as darkness was falling at about 5:30 PM.

Our hosts immediately showed us upstairs to our large bedroom with a huge attached bathroom. A separate door led out onto a balcony, equipped with table and chairs, and with a wonderful view of the mountains and the valley below. We liked the establishment so much that we ended up booking a second night there at a cost of 300 Rand per night (about US$80 at that time).

It was a shame that we only spent one night at this beautiful resort. And even more of a shame that we slept most of the time we were there. We arrived at Johannesburg airport after traveling for 26 hours with only about an hour of sleep, if you could call it that. On top of that, the drive to Sabie took 4 hours. When we arrived, we ate lunch at Smokey's, an eccentric little diner-type restaurant (banana on pizza is yummy!). We asked our waiter where would be a good place to stay, and he made a few suggestions. Then the manager came over and made a few more. I'm not sure who mentioned it, but as we had the names swirling in our heads as we were driving down the road after lunch, we came upon Lone Creek and recognized the name. We pulled into the drive and we sold almost immediately. The grounds are absolutely lovely and the main lodge is a cute and comfortable haven for bleary-eyed travelers. They showed us a room in the main lodge and a detached "cabin" which was the most luxurious cabin I ever saw, fireplace included. We opted for the room in the lodge due to the price advantage. It was certainly the best room we had in our entire stay in South Africa, by far!

The entire facility is tastefully decorated leaning towards elegant. The pool is slightly small, but very nicely landscaped. Our room in the lodge had a balcony with view of the pool and a meadow with the creek running through it, with rolling, forested hills in the background. Being on honeymoon, we were happy to have both a shower and a bathtub big enough for two, with scented candles on the ledge right next to the soap!

Lone Creek has rates for self-catering as well as all-inclusive and half-board. We were lucky with our timing. It was slow for them and they asked how much we wanted to pay. We got a great deal, which I think was nearly half-price! R500 included our room for 2 and breakfast.

This backpackers in the town of Sabie offers a lot in outdoor activities and they can easily organize most adventurous excursions around the area. They have dorm, quads, doubles and singles. Beer is cheap; there is a pool table and an outdoor braai area. I had a lot of fun and highly recommend this place.
