Horns on the wall can't butt ya!

Tshukudu was our first "lodge". The "" are because it is an enclosed area that specialises in taking care of injured or orphaned animals. For us it was like dipping a toe into an ocean we had never tested before. Cold enough to be exciting, but enticing all the same. After a couple of days at Tshukud, we felt ready for the real thing!
Elephants don't say "moo!"

In South Africa, it seems important that every tourist gets to see the "Big Five". (If you have limited time, this is a good reason to visit a place like Tshukudu where the big five have a limited number of hiding places....)
One of our favourite things was the game drive just before sundown, when the light gave us some amazing sights and one or two good pictures!
SUN CITY, THE LOST PALACE.
by PEE-WEE
"THE LOST PALACE"
Deep in the heart of the North West Province, just 1½ hours north of Johannesburg, lies a city surrounded by acres of untamed Africa. Legend says that this truly magnificent Palace was built for a king by an ancient civilization, who made this idyllic valley their home until it was destroyed by an earthquake. Now fully restored, The Palace once again offers unequalled royal hospitality.
Close to the hustle and bustle of Gauteng, the North West Province is a quick and easy escape from the big city.
The best known destination is the rather improbable Sun City resort complex - where you can gamble ,eat ,watch extravaganzas or just stare in awe at the fantastic architecture of the Lost City.
There are two Gary Player designed golf courses, horse rides and a whole water park for outdoor amusement - a "beach" with artificial sand, real palm tree's and man made waves.
Next door to Sun City is the Pilansberg National Park, which offers the opportunity of seeing the Big Five in a particularly scenic environment.
There are three lodges in the park,of which the most attractive is Tshukudu.
You can drive yourself around the park or choose to do a guided drive or walk .
The most fun though ,would be the hot air balloon ride.
The other major park in the province is Madikwe Game Reserve , which is best known for it's sizeable population of the beautiful , rare and endangered African Wild Dog.
The park is situated on the old route to Botswana, and there are many tall tales told about the journeys north.
The best place to hear them is at the bar in the small town of Groot Marico.
It was here that the author Herman Charles Bosman lived and taught at the local school.
After lessons ,he would write hilarious anecdotes about his fellow citizens and their drinking habits, with a wry fondness.
While in Groot Marico, why not do a Mampoer tasting trip?

Is it safe to drive between Johannesburg airport and Sun City in a rental car?

In daylight; yes.

200km, under 2.5 hours going the simplest (not shortest) route AROUND Pretoria:
From airport,
- north on R21
- northeast onto N1 at junction 134 towards Polokwane (follows after junction 12)
- west onto N4 at juction 156 towards Rustenburg (NOT the earlier N4 junction 145)
- north onto R556 at junction 225 marked SUN CITY and this takes you all the way there.
Some tolls payable on above route

Hi
I drive this route on business every couple of weeks, and it's fine. However, Gerald is right that you should drive this in daylight as there are a lot of pedestrians and livestock around the villages en route. In case you haven't visited before, the days here are pretty short as we are close to Tropic of Capricorn, so it gets light about 0530 and is dark by 1900.
I would however caution that this route is considered as an 'income generation' opportunity by the provincial authorities, and they routinely speed trap along the last section of the road. So be particularly mindful of the posted speed limits - the general speed limit in South Africa is 120kph, but around villages and road junctions, the speed limit is reduced to 60kph or 80kph, often over a prlonged section of road.
We're delighted to have your contibution to GDP as a visitor, but it would be a pity to donate any more to the traffic department!
Drive safely!
Regards
Cathy

We (American family of three) did the Jo'burg-Sun City -Jo'burg round trip by rental car last year and had no problems. Just do it in daylihgt, as mentioned earlier, due to pederstrians and livestock along the road.
