Upington, The Gateway to Kgalagadi and Augrabies
Upington is the largest town nearest to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (formely Kalahari Gemsbok Park) and Augrabies Falls National Park. It is a nice town with good facilites. There is a huge Pick n Pay in the town center and a good backpackers close by. Yebo!
The town itself is nice but has not significant interest in itself. The surrounding area is heavily culitivated as the Orange River pass through. There are some great vineyards in this area. Fruit, wheat and cotton are also produced as well as grapes.
Outside of town is a samll nature reserve called Spitskop Nature Reserve. I believe you can find some antelope here but not much more.
Witsand Nature Reserve (200 km east of Upington) is interesting for its large white sand dunes amist the red Kahalari. It is well known for its groaning sand, a noise created when the wind blows over the dunes.
Augrabies Falls National Park is about 120 km west of Upington and boasts an incredible desert habitat located right on the Orange River with the worlds 7th largest waterfalls.
Kgalagadi is the main draw and it is located 250 km north of Upington.
