The International Hotel: A name to conjur with!
You have to believe that the person who named this hotel had a wry sense of humour, as it's hard to think of a town that is less 'international' than Vryburg!
True, Vryburg does have the depressing, neglected air of a forgotten border town, but in this case, the nearest border with Botswana) is still some distance away. Still, maybe in Vryburg's past, the border was closer, or perhaps the name is a nod to the crossborder trade that has probably provided the mainstay of business to this establishment.
On a travel page sadly bereft of positivism, I can say that the International Hotel is probably the high spot of Vryburg's tourist attractions and a cut above most of its platteland peers. It has a fairly attractive bar with what appears to be a reasonable restaurant - as yet, I have not sampled either - and the exterior is moderately attractive in a 'turn of the (20th) century' sort of colonial way.
Unusual for this region, it also has reasonable conference room facilities - the reason for my visits - which doubtless serve double duty as the location for weddings and other major social events.
