Forever Resorts, Warmbaths: Fantastically affordable family accommodation

(work in progress)
Warmbaths was the venue for my Big Birthday Bash in July 2013, and what a blast we had!

I chose Warmbaths for my Big Birthday celebration because it's the most family friendly place I know, and I wanted to celebrate with family and friends in a location that offered something for everyone. And when your group of 25 spans the age range of 11 months to 62 years old, that's a big ask!

We hired four of the log cabins and shoehorned our guests in on a companionable but cosy basis. The cabins sleep 6 (one double room, one room with twin beds and a pull out sleeper couch that's suitable for kids) and we delegated catering duties between the group. Kitchens are well equipped with the basic crockey, cultery and cooking utensils, although you might want to bring some of your own specialist equipment if you're more ambitious.

The beauty of the place is that the accommodation is basic but comfortable, and weren't in each other's pockets. The accommodation is within easy walking distance of the pools, so we just made sure that one or two responsible adults accompanied the herd of small children at all times. Smaller groups felt free to pursue their own interests on game drives or game rides, and we congregated back to the cabins for breakfast and supper.

In July 2013, a 6 bed cabin cost about R1500 per night. Considering that this includes the entry fee for 6 people for the duration of your stay, that's excellent value (working on the low season rate for six people, this would be R420 alone).

If you're on a budget, I'd strongly recommend bringing all your food and drink with you. If you've forgotten something, then there's a small shop in the resort, but the much better option is to stop off at the excellent Spar in Bela Bela, which will offer virtually everything you need, and is less than 1km from the entrance.

Mabalingwe: Mabalingwe

Mabalingwe is a time share resort approx 30km outside of Bela Bela on the road to Thabazimbe. It is a game farm that offers a great variety of game including the big five. The self-catering accommodation is absolutely fantastic. They offer game drives at extremely reasonable prices. The staff is fantastic.
