Where to stay

There are two 'hotels' in Karima - one just north of the main souk, and one on the north side of the large square near the power station. I stayed in the latter and was the only guest for most of the time.

It was basic - a large empty room with a fan and some beds in it - but clean and the man in charge was friendly (although didn't speak any English). There are dozens of empty rooms and probably room for about a hundred people(talk about wishful thinking!) but when another guest did turn up (a Sudanese teacher on his way home to Dongola) he got put in to share with me. A bit annoying but to Sudanese it's preferable to share rather than be on your own, and incomprehensible anyone might think otherwise. Although he might have changed his mind when I had a 4am alarm call to catch my bus back to Khartoum!

There are basic toilets and cold water showers. No food is available but there are shops nearby. It cost a couple of dollars a night.
