Apparently you can camp out near the pyramids in the middle of the desert. I would imagine this is an amazing experience, although there is talk of snakes and scorpions. Friends of mine have also stayed with the gatekeeper and his family...he was very keen for us to stay, but we had to get back to Khartoum that evening so couldn't accept his offer...served us right, as we ended up stranded in Shendi that evening! A hotel is under construction near to the historical site of Meroe, however, we were told that they did not get permission from the government and hence it has been left unfinished.
Apparently there is a camp nearby run by Italians. It is also possible to sleep on the site if you have a sleeping bag and ask the officials kindly for permission! Leave a Comment Theme: Hotel
