Another of Kassala's better hotels is the Safa, just round the corner from the Telal ash-Sharq. Two storeys and about thirty rooms, this hotel also has good views from the rooftop terrace towards the mountains.
The staff are willing to do anything for you, as the mother of a friend found out. A week and several cups of tea later, she went to pay the bill. Trying to leave a tip for the helpful staff, they refused and ended up giving her a substantial discount!
Kassala's top establishment, this hotel is owned by the vice-chancellor of the local university, hence why we stayed. As hotels go, it is not bad at all....air-con, en-suite functional bathrooms, TV, fan, mosquito protection, cockroach killing spray....but the best bit is the balcony, or more specifically the view from the balcony over the whole town and the amazing almost-phallic mountains. The roof has a cafe (not open in october, but you can still sit there) with even better views.
I thought that the sink on the balcony made an interesting alternative to washing inside...probably not to all tastes, as you wash within sight of half the town! It costs a little more than the other hotels in town, and is often full of honeymoon couples or visiting aid workers.
